Chapter 10 - Obey, or Leave
Saturday morning looked painfully normal.
Sunlight filled the white kitchen.
Waffles sat beneath a silver cover.
Fresh berries filled a glass bowl.
Coffee steamed beside Daniel’s plate.
Vanessa arrived wearing a white blazer.
Claire wore a white blouse and placed the black card beneath the edge of the table.
Daniel began with a rehearsed speech.
“We all made mistakes.”
Claire waited.
“Vanessa’s company can recover if we consolidate the family investments.”
“There are no family investments,” Claire said. “There is my separate trust.”
“You are married.”
“That does not transfer ownership.”
Vanessa placed the authorization form beside Claire’s plate.
“Give me the card.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“Do not create another scene.”
“We’re alone.”
“That has never stopped you from acting dramatic.”
Claire looked toward her phone.
The secure recording was active.
Daniel continued.
“You will sign the access form, close Miriam’s audit and tell the bank every transfer was authorized.”
“And if I don’t?”
He leaned forward.
“You leave this house with nothing.”
Claire looked around the kitchen.
Her mother’s trust owned the down payment.
Her salary had paid half the mortgage.
Yet Daniel spoke as though marriage had turned every shared object into his weapon.
“I am leaving,” she said. “But not with nothing.”
Vanessa’s fork stopped.
Daniel stared at Claire.
“You filed for divorce?”
“Not yet.”
He stood.
“Give me the card.”
“No.”
He reached for it.
Claire covered it with her hand.
Daniel grabbed the coffee cup.
For half a second, Claire believed he might throw it against the wall.
Instead, he hurled the scalding liquid directly into her face.
She screamed and fell from the chair.
“Obey, or leave.”
Vanessa watched from behind him.
A cold smile appeared.
“Give me the card.”
Claire pressed the napkin to her cheek and reached for the phone that had fallen beside the shattered cup.
The automatic medical upload had captured images from the live camera.
She added a photograph of the fresh burn.
Then she spoke the command.
“Call Miriam.”
Daniel laughed.
He still believed Claire was bluffing.
Miriam answered.
Claire said only, “Activate everything.”
The freezes began.
Police received the recording.
The trust card logged Vanessa’s first attempted transfer.
Every prepared action became immediate.
Daniel saw none of that.
He focused only on Claire crawling toward the side door.
“Come back here.”
She stood despite the pain.
“No.”

Claire left her wedding ring on the table and walked out before either of them realized the marriage had already ended.
