Chapter 6 - The First Postnup

Nathaniel introduced the agreement as routine estate planning.

He placed it beside Isabella’s breakfast plate.

“My attorney says we need updated protections.”

“For whom?”

“For both of us.”

Isabella read the first page.

The language was dense.

But the purpose was clear.

She would grant Nathaniel control over any family trust, inheritance or undisclosed beneficial interest.

She would also waive the right to challenge transfers made during the marriage.

“I’m not signing this.”

Nathaniel leaned back.

“Why?”

“It gives you authority over property that may not belong to you.”

“What property?”

“Anything inherited.”

“From the garage?”

The contempt in his voice made Isabella look up.

“My father’s work is not a joke.”

“A repair shop is not an empire.”

“No honest work is beneath you.”

Nathaniel’s smile disappeared.

“Then sign.”

“No.”

Savannah entered the dining room carrying coffee.

She was not supposed to be inside the mansion that morning.

Isabella looked at her husband.

“Why is she here?”

“She’s helping with company restructuring.”

“In our kitchen?”

Savannah sat beside Nathaniel.

“You’re making a simple document emotional.”

Isabella closed the folder.

“My marriage is not your business.”

Nathaniel grabbed the folder from her.

“Everything affecting Cross Dominion is her business.”

“Then perhaps you should marry her.”

For one second, nobody spoke.

Nathaniel stood.

His chair struck the floor behind him.

He gripped Isabella’s wrist.

Hard.

“Do not threaten me.”

“I said let go.”

Savannah watched without moving.

Nathaniel released Isabella only after finger marks appeared.

He apologized later.

Not for grabbing her.

For “losing patience.”

Then he explained that hiding wealth from a husband was a betrayal.

Isabella understood he knew something.

She called Edward from the garage that afternoon.

“Did anyone access Mother’s trust?”

“Not through the legal office.”

“Nathaniel knows the name Whitmore.”

Edward became silent.

“Come home.”

“I need to know what he plans.”

“You know enough.”

“No. I know he suspects.”

Edward’s voice softened.

“Isabella, are you safe?”

She looked at the bruise on her wrist.

“Yes.”

It was the first direct lie she told her father.

Edward did not believe it.

He contacted the Whitmore legal team and ordered a quiet audit of every investment connected to Cross Dominion.

The first report arrived that night.
