Chapter 14 - Her Mother’s Final Protection

Isabella’s mother, Catherine, had created the trust shortly before her death.
She knew Edward’s wealth would attract people who loved access more than they loved Isabella.
But Catherine also knew her husband.
Edward’s instinct would be to control every risk.
So she designed the trust to protect Isabella from both predatory spouses and an overprotective father.
Isabella alone held the final authority.
Edward could freeze assets during an emergency.
He could not permanently transfer, sell or manage them without Isabella’s approval.
The anti-coercion provision required independent review whenever a spouse demanded control.
Nathaniel’s private investigator had located the law firm that drafted the trust.
He attempted to bribe a former clerk.
The clerk refused and informed the firm.
Nathaniel then planned to replace the original documents with altered copies.
Savannah entered the mansion vault to obtain Isabella’s passport and trust correspondence.
The postnup would have served as apparent proof that Isabella voluntarily overrode her mother’s protections.
If successful, Nathaniel could have accessed billions in private assets.
He did not want only Cross Dominion.
He wanted Whitmore Global.
Isabella sat with Edward inside Catherine’s old office.
The sealed wedding envelope rested between them.
She finally opened the second page she had never read.
My daughter,
Love should never require you to prove loyalty by surrendering the ability to leave.
A person who needs control of your property to feel secure does not want partnership. He wants captivity.
Isabella pressed the page against her chest.
“I thought hiding the trust would protect the marriage.”
Edward sat opposite her.
“I encouraged that.”
“You warned me about him.”
“I warned you because I wanted to choose for you.”
“You were right.”
“That does not make the way I handled it right.”
Isabella looked at him.
Edward continued.
“I made wealth feel dangerous because I used it to watch you. You believed the only way to be loved freely was to pretend you had none.”
Tears filled Isabella’s eyes.
Nathaniel’s cruelty was his responsibility.
But the silence around her identity had grown from older wounds.
Edward reached across the desk.
“What happens now belongs to you.”
Not Whitmore Global.
Not the lawyers.
Not the Cross board.
Her.
Isabella decided to testify publicly.
Nathaniel’s attorneys had begun describing the study incident as a financial ambush created by a billionaire family.
