Chapter 9 - The Son She Planned to Sacrifice

Detective Brooks examined the copy of the toxicology report Marcus sent.

It listed Daniel as the owner of a prescription bottle allegedly found in Richard’s car.

The prescription number traced back to a clinic Daniel had never visited.

Dr. Reeves had signed the form.

Victoria had created a complete false trail.

If the original report surfaced without context, Daniel could become the prime suspect in his father’s death.

“She built insurance against you,” Brooks said.

Daniel stared through the hospital nursery window.

His daughter slept inside the incubator.

“My mother spent years preparing to destroy both of her sons.”

“She may have prepared more than one version of the story.”

Daniel understood.

If Marcus betrayed her, the shell companies made him look like the thief.

If Daniel challenged her, the toxicology report made him look like a murderer.

Victoria never trusted anyone.

She only collected leverage.

Elena was awake when Daniel returned to her room.

He told her everything.

Instead of panicking, she asked for her broken phone.

“The device is damaged,” Daniel said.

“The memory card might not be.”

“What’s on it?”

“The original call with Samuel.”

Elena explained that Samuel had described meeting Richard hours before his death.

Richard had discovered that Victoria planned to remove him as chairman through a false mental incompetence claim. He intended to expose her at the next board meeting.

That evening, Victoria invited him to dinner.

Dr. Reeves was present.

Samuel warned Richard not to go home alone.

Richard refused to believe his own wife would hurt him.

Daniel looked away.

His father had made the same mistake he had.

He had confused family loyalty with proof of goodness.

Elena touched his arm.

“You didn’t know.”

“I defended her every time you tried to tell me something felt wrong.”

“You were raised to believe questioning her was betrayal.”

“And you paid for it.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“We survived. Now we tell the truth.”

A nurse entered carrying their daughter.

The baby had improved enough for Elena to hold her briefly.

Daniel helped place the tiny bundle against Elena’s chest.

They both cried.

“What should we name her?” Elena whispered.

Daniel remembered the letters above the unfinished crib.

“Hope.”

Elena smiled through tears.

“Hope Carter.”

For a moment, the room felt untouched by Victoria.

Then Brooks called.

Marcus and Samuel had reached the federal building.

But Marcus was bleeding from a gunshot wound.

And before losing consciousness, he said Victoria was on her way to the hospital.

👉 Victoria was not coming to escape—she was coming to take newborn Hope herself.
