Chapter 1 - The Baby Moved

Daniel Carter had prepared himself for bad news.

He had not prepared himself to see his nine-month-pregnant wife lying inside an open coffin.

The wooden casket stood beneath the crystal chandelier in the center of his family’s white marble living room. Elena wore the cream maternity dress he had bought her before leaving for the UAE three months earlier.

Her hands rested over her swollen belly.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were closed.

“No.”

Daniel’s suitcase fell from his hand.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

Behind the coffin stood his mother, Victoria, dressed in black. His younger brother Marcus held a glass of whiskey near the fireplace, staring at the floor.

Daniel ran forward.

“Elena!”

He gripped the side of the coffin, his knees nearly giving way.

Victoria placed a cold hand on his shoulder.

“She died in childbirth.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“Where is the baby?”

Victoria’s expression did not change.

“The child didn’t survive.”

The words tore through him.

Daniel looked back at Elena.

Only three nights earlier, she had sent him a voice message.

Our daughter kicked all night. She misses her daddy.

He reached into the coffin and placed a trembling hand on her belly.

Then the cream fabric rose beneath his palm.

A strong kick.

Daniel froze.

Another movement pushed against his fingers.

“The baby just moved.”

Marcus’s whiskey glass slipped slightly in his hand.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You’re imagining it.”

Daniel pressed two fingers against Elena’s neck.

At first, nothing.

Then he felt it.

A weak pulse.

Slow.

Faint.

But alive.

He looked up at his mother.

“She’s breathing.”

Victoria grabbed his arm.

“Close the coffin. She’s gone.”

Marcus moved toward the lid.

Daniel shoved him back with enough force to send him stumbling against the table.

“No one touches her.”

He activated the recorder on his smartwatch and called emergency services.

Victoria’s face turned white when she saw the red recording light.

Within minutes, the front doors burst open. Paramedics rushed toward the coffin as a police officer blocked Marcus from leaving.

One paramedic checked Elena’s eyes, pulse, and breathing.

Then he looked at Daniel in horror.

“She’s alive.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

The paramedic lifted Elena onto a stretcher.

“And she’s been heavily sedated.”

Daniel stepped between his wife and his mother.

His grief disappeared.

What remained was colder than anger.

“What did you give her?”

Victoria said nothing.

But Marcus looked toward the locked study upstairs.

And Daniel realized the coffin was not where the crime had begun.

May you like

It was only where his family intended to finish it.

👉 Before Daniel could follow Elena to the hospital, Marcus whispered the name of the person who had helped Victoria fake her death.
