Chapter 4 - The Blue Folder

The doctors began an emergency procedure to stabilize Elena and the baby.
Daniel could do nothing except wait.
He replayed Elena’s whisper.
The blue folder.
He called the police officer at the mansion.
“There’s evidence in my wife’s room. A blue folder.”
“We’ve already secured the property.”
“My mother will try to destroy it.”
The officer paused.
“Where should we look?”
Daniel remembered the nursery Elena had designed. The pale-blue wallpaper. The white crib. The wooden letters spelling their daughter’s name.
Then he remembered Elena joking about hiding her pregnancy snacks inside the window seat.
“The nursery. Under the cushion near the east window.”
An hour later, Detective Maya Brooks arrived at the hospital carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a thick blue folder.
“Elena hid this beneath a false panel,” Brooks said. “Your mother told us the nursery had already been cleared.”
Daniel opened the folder with gloved hands.
Bank records.
Forged signatures.
Property transfers.
Payments to Dr. Reeves.
And repeated transfers from Carter Global Holdings into a company named Morrow Development.
Daniel recognized the company.
Marcus had launched it two years earlier.
He looked at the total.
More than twelve million dollars.
Marcus had not simply witnessed the crime.
He had benefited from the fraud that Elena discovered.
Then Daniel found a legal document drafted six months earlier.
It concerned the voting shares of Carter Global.
Under Daniel’s father’s will, Daniel controlled forty percent. Victoria held twenty percent. Marcus held ten.
The remaining thirty percent would transfer into a family trust when Daniel had his first child.
Until the child reached adulthood, Elena would act as co-trustee with Daniel.
If Elena and the child died before birth, Victoria would control those shares.
The coffin suddenly made perfect sense.
Victoria did not merely want Elena gone.
She needed Elena and the baby declared dead before Daniel returned.
Detective Brooks watched his expression.
“There’s another page.”
Daniel turned it over.
It was a letter addressed to him.
Elena had written it by hand.
Daniel, your mother believes your father left everything to you because he trusted her. He didn’t. He suspected she had been taking money for years. I found a second version of his will, witnessed by someone named Samuel Grant.
Daniel stared at the signature.
Samuel Grant had been his father’s closest friend and the company’s former chief financial officer.
He had disappeared from the family’s life immediately after Daniel’s father died.
Victoria always claimed Samuel had stolen money and fled the country.
But Elena’s letter said something different.
Samuel did not steal from your father. He tried to warn him.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Marcus.
Daniel answered without speaking.
Marcus’s breath came fast.
“Mother knows you found the folder.”
“Good.”
“You need to understand. She isn’t going to wait for the police.”
“What are you saying?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“She sent someone to the hospital.”
Daniel looked toward Elena’s operating room.

At the end of the hallway, a man wearing hospital scrubs turned away and disappeared through a staff door.
👉 The person Victoria sent to the hospital carried the same medication that had nearly stopped Elena’s heart.
