Chapter 7 - The Witness in Hiding

Samuel Grant had spent seven years living in a small coastal town under his middle name.
He had kept every document Richard Carter gave him before the crash.
The original will.
The financial ledgers.
Emails describing Victoria’s unauthorized transfers.
And a handwritten note from Richard.
If anything happens to me, protect my sons from their mother.
Daniel read a scanned copy Detective Brooks received through an encrypted email.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
His father had known.
Not necessarily that Victoria planned to kill him, but that she was capable of destroying anyone who threatened her control.
Samuel agreed to meet federal investigators at a secure location.
He never arrived.
His abandoned car was found near a gas station. The driver’s door remained open, and his phone lay shattered beside the road.
Security footage showed a black SUV pulling behind him.
The vehicle belonged to Morrow Development.
Marcus’s company.
Brooks confronted Daniel in the hospital hallway.
“Your brother’s accounts funded the shell corporations. His vehicle was used to take Samuel.”
Daniel wanted to deny it.
But he remembered Marcus moving toward the coffin lid.
He remembered his brother saying Elena was never supposed to wake up.
“Find him,” Daniel said.
“We’re trying.”
“What about my mother?”
“She withdrew cash before leaving the mansion. She had travel documents prepared.”
This had not been a panicked escape.
Victoria had planned for failure.
Daniel entered Elena’s room.
Her eyes were still closed, but the doctor said her sedation level was finally decreasing.
Their daughter remained stable in neonatal care.
For the first time, Daniel allowed himself to believe he might not lose them.
Then Elena’s fingers tightened around his.
He leaned forward.
“Elena?”
Her eyelids fluttered.
She opened them slowly.
Fear appeared immediately.
“The coffin.”
“You’re safe.”
“Victoria…”
“She’s gone.”
Elena tried to sit up, but pain stopped her.
“The baby?”
Daniel took her hand between both of his.
“She’s alive. She’s beautiful.”
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
“I heard them say she was dead.”
“They lied.”
“I couldn’t move.”
Her voice cracked.
“I could hear everything, Daniel. They dressed me. They put me inside that coffin.”
Daniel lowered his head against her hand.
“I’m sorry.”
“You came home.”
“Almost too late.”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Marcus tried to help me.”
Daniel raised his head.
“What?”
“He warned me not to drink the tea. He tried to stop Reeves.”
“Then why did he help put you in the coffin?”
“Because Victoria threatened someone.”
“Who?”
Elena swallowed.
“Marcus has a son.”
Daniel stared at her.
Marcus had never told the family he had a child.

And Victoria had used that hidden child to control him.
👉 Marcus had not kidnapped Samuel for Victoria—he had taken him somewhere she could not reach.
