Chapter 18 - The Trial of Victoria Carter
Victoria’s trial lasted twelve weeks.
The charges included attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, falsifying medical records, obstruction of justice, and the murder of Richard Carter.
Dr. Reeves pleaded guilty and testified against her.
He described placing sedatives in Richard’s medication.
He admitted signing Elena and Hope’s death certificates before either had died.
He confessed that Victoria ordered him to increase Elena’s dose when her pulse remained too strong.
Marcus testified from the witness stand.
He did not excuse his actions.
He admitted helping transfer stolen money and failing to save Elena when he had the chance.
His honesty cost him his freedom.
In exchange for cooperation, prosecutors reduced his charges, but he still received a prison sentence.
Before being taken away, he looked at Elena.
“I’m sorry.”
Elena nodded once.
She had not forgiven him completely.
But she respected that he finally accepted responsibility.
Samuel Grant presented Richard’s original will and financial records.
Digital experts proved Victoria had edited the crash video.
Hospital staff confirmed the forged transfer orders for Hope.
Then Elena took the stand.
Victoria watched her with the same cold expression she wore beside the coffin.
Elena described being held down in the nursery.
She described hearing Victoria order the coffin prepared.
“I could hear them discussing flowers,” Elena said. “I could hear Marcus crying. I could feel my daughter moving, but I could not open my eyes.”
The courtroom remained silent.
“I heard Victoria tell Dr. Reeves that Daniel would be easier to control once he believed he had lost everything.”
The prosecutor asked, “What kept you fighting?”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“My baby kicked.”
Daniel lowered his head as tears filled his eyes.
“That movement reminded me she was alive. I thought that if she could fight, I had to fight too.”
Victoria’s attorneys claimed Elena was motivated by money.
The prosecutor displayed Richard’s true will.
Elena would have received no direct inheritance.
Her only role was to protect Hope’s trust.
The final evidence was Daniel’s smartwatch recording from the mansion.
Victoria’s voice filled the courtroom.
Close it. She’s gone.
Then Daniel’s voice:
She has a pulse.
Victoria had known Elena was alive and still ordered the coffin closed.
The jury deliberated for less than five hours.
