Chapter 17 - The Choice She Could Not Understand

Daniel looked from Marcus to Hope.
Victoria expected desperation.
She expected him to beg.
Instead, he remained still.
“I choose neither.”
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t control the choice anymore.”
“I have the gun.”
“And the building is surrounded.”
Victoria laughed.
“The police cannot enter. I placed charges throughout the lobby.”
She lifted a small remote.
“One wrong movement, and this entire structure collapses.”
Daniel heard Brooks through his hidden earpiece.
We’re scanning for signals.
Marcus looked weak from his gunshot wound.
“Daniel, take Hope and go.”
Victoria struck the back of his head with the gun.
“Be quiet.”
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“You spent our lives teaching us that love meant obedience.”
Victoria pointed the weapon at him.
“I made you everything you are.”
“No. Dad gave us opportunities. Elena gave me courage. You gave us fear.”
Victoria’s thumb moved over the remote.
Daniel continued speaking to keep her attention away from the tactical officers moving through the lower tunnel.
“You cannot understand my choice because you have never loved anyone.”
“I loved this family.”
“You loved owning it.”
Victoria’s face twisted.
The remote’s signal allowed the police to locate the receiver.
Brooks whispered through Daniel’s earpiece.
Charges are beneath the central staircase. We need the trigger away from her.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
His brother gave the smallest nod.
Then Marcus dropped his weight suddenly and drove his shoulder backward into Victoria.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Daniel ran toward Hope.
Victoria stumbled but kept hold of the remote.
Marcus grabbed her wrist.
She struck him across the face.
Daniel reached the carrier and lifted Hope against his chest.
Victoria raised the remote.
“You destroyed everything!”
Before she could press the button, Elena’s voice sounded through the building speakers.
“No, Victoria. You did.”
Victoria froze.
Elena had connected the theater-style public address system from the command vehicle.
Then the full audio of Richard’s crash began playing.
Victoria heard her own recorded voice confessing that she had drugged her husband.
Police lights flooded the windows.
“You have nowhere left to hide,” Elena said.
Victoria’s hand shook.
Marcus twisted the remote from her fingers.
Tactical officers rushed in and forced Victoria to the floor.
Daniel shielded Hope against his chest.
For the first time in his life, he watched his mother lose control.
She screamed his name as officers handcuffed her.
“You owe me everything!”
Daniel looked down at his daughter.
“No.”
He turned away.
May you like
“I owe you nothing.”
👉 Victoria was finally arrested, but the courtroom would decide whether the world believed Elena—or the powerful woman who had buried evidence for decades.
