Chapter 9 - THE HUMILIATION BEFORE THE FIRST DANCE

The ceremony was beautiful.

Vanessa walked beneath white roses while a string quartet played.

Ethan looked at her with complete trust.

Rachel wondered whether she should stop the wedding.

But she still did not know what Ava had recorded.

She only knew something frightened her daughter.

During the reception, Rachel and Ava were seated beside the kitchen doors.

Servers passed constantly behind their chairs.

A tall centerpiece blocked their view of the newlyweds.

When Rachel moved it, Diane appeared.

“Do not rearrange the decorations.”

“We cannot see.”

“You were not invited for the view.”

Rachel looked at her mother.

“Why was I invited?”

“So no one could say Vanessa excluded her struggling sister.”

There it was.

Not love.

Appearance.

After dinner, Diane took the microphone.

She spoke about sacrifice.

Loyalty.

Family reputation.

Then Vanessa stood beside her.

“I want to thank everyone who contributed to this day,” the bride said.

Her eyes settled on Rachel.

“Even those who could only contribute by showing up.”

A few guests laughed uncertainly.

Rachel started to rise.

Ava held her wrist.

“Wait.”

Vanessa continued.

“My sister has faced many challenges. Some were unfortunate. Others were choices.”

Ethan turned toward her.

“Vanessa.”

She ignored him.

“Still, we made room for her and her daughter because family means carrying people who cannot carry themselves.”

Ava lowered her face.

Rachel stood.

“We’re leaving.”

Then Vanessa touched her wrist dramatically.

“My bracelet.”

The room quieted.

“The diamond bracelet my mother gave me is gone.”

Diane looked toward Rachel’s table almost immediately.

Vanessa’s maid of honor claimed she had seen Ava near the jewelry.

“That child was staring at it all morning,” Vanessa said.

Rachel’s voice became sharp.

“Do not accuse my daughter.”

A security manager approached.

“Ma’am, may we check your belongings?”

“No.”

Diane stood beside him.

“If you have nothing to hide, let them look.”

The guests were watching.

Phones were raised.

Rachel realized the moment had been planned.

Vanessa wanted her searched in front of everyone.

Before Rachel could stop him, the security manager opened her red purse.

He removed the diamond bracelet.

Gasps filled the ballroom.

Diane shook her head with theatrical sadness.

“I knew she was desperate. I never thought she would use her own child.”

Rachel’s face burned with humiliation.

Then Ava pushed back her chair.

She walked toward the DJ platform.

👉 Vanessa believed the bracelet had ended the argument, but it finally gave Ava the courage to turn on the screen.
