Chapter 5 - THE ACCOUNT RACHEL NEVER OPENED

That evening, Rachel received an alert from her bank.
Her account had been frozen because of unusual business activity.
She called customer service.
A representative explained that a payment of $18,500 had passed through an account connected to her Social Security number.
“I don’t have an account with that balance,” Rachel said.
“It was opened nine years ago.”
“That’s impossible.”
The representative could not provide more information without an in-person identity review.
Rachel scheduled an appointment for the next morning.
When she arrived, the branch manager showed her a signature card.
The account had been opened weeks after Daniel’s death.
Rachel’s name appeared at the bottom.
The signature looked almost correct.
Almost.
But Rachel had been in the hospital on the date shown.
“This isn’t mine.”
The manager became cautious.
“Do you recognize the authorized contact?”
Rachel read the name.
Diane Miller.
Her mother.
The account had received several large deposits over the years.
Each deposit was transferred out within days.
The bank could not immediately identify the original source.
Rachel’s stomach tightened.
She called Diane from the parking lot.
“Why are you listed on an account opened in my name?”
Diane was silent for one second too long.
“You must be confused.”
“I’m looking at the paperwork.”
“I handled your finances after the accident.”
“You told me every account was closed.”
“Perhaps something remained open by mistake.”
“Hundreds of thousands of dollars moved through it.”
Diane’s voice sharpened.
“Do not start creating drama before your sister’s wedding.”
“This has nothing to do with Vanessa.”
“Everything you do becomes about Vanessa because you resent her.”
Rachel ended the call.
When she returned home, Ava was sitting at the kitchen table with the silver flash drive in front of her.
She slid it toward Rachel.
Rachel reached for it.
Then someone knocked loudly on the apartment door.
Diane’s voice came from the hallway.
“Rachel, open this door.”
Ava snatched the flash drive back and hid it inside her cardigan pocket.
By the time Rachel opened the door, Diane was smiling.
But she had brought Vanessa with her.
May you like
And Vanessa was carrying a legal document.
👉 Diane arrived before Rachel could see the video, proving she was far more frightened of the old account than she wanted anyone to know.
