Chapter 4 - THE FINAL DRESS FITTING

The bridal suite was larger than Rachel’s entire apartment.

Mirrors covered three walls.

Champagne chilled beside trays of fruit and pastries.

Vanessa stood on a platform wearing a silk gown that cost more than Rachel earned in two years.

She looked at Rachel through the mirror.

“You’re late.”

“It’s nine fifty-eight.”

“I said ten.”

Rachel placed her sewing case down.

Ava sat quietly in a curtained alcove with her tablet and headphones.

She had asked to come because Rachel could not afford a babysitter.

Vanessa sighed when she saw her.

“Why is she here?”

“She’ll stay out of the way.”

“She always makes people uncomfortable.”

Ava’s head lowered.

Rachel stepped between them.

“She’s eight years old.”

“And still can’t answer a simple question.”

“She speaks when she feels safe.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Then I guess she doesn’t feel safe around normal people.”

Rachel nearly packed her tools and left.

But Vanessa’s dress was pulling badly at the waist, and the boutique’s seamstress had refused responsibility after Vanessa changed her measurements twice.

Rachel focused on the gown.

For two hours, she adjusted seams by hand.

When she finished, the dress fit perfectly.

Vanessa examined herself.

“You should be grateful I’m letting people see your work.”

“You’re not telling anyone I altered it.”

“That would invite questions.”

Rachel stepped into the hallway to call a fabric supplier.

While she was gone, Lucas entered the bridal suite through a side door.

Ava recognized him from the engagement photographs.

The best man.

He looked around before pulling Vanessa behind the curtain near the fitting platform.

Ava was sitting only a few feet away.

She froze.

Lucas kissed Vanessa.

Then Diane entered carrying a black folder.

Ava’s tablet was already recording.

She had been filming the moving lights on the mirrored wall because she liked the way they looked in her drawings.

Her headphones were not playing music.

She heard everything.

“The vendor accounts are ready,” Lucas said.

Diane handed him the folder.

“Ethan signs the final authorization after the reception.”

Vanessa laughed.

“He thinks it’s for the honeymoon property.”

“And Rachel?” Lucas asked.

Diane’s answer came without hesitation.

“Her name is already attached to one account. If the audit finds anything, she becomes the desperate sister who stole from the wedding.”

Ava covered her mouth.

Vanessa then mentioned Daniel.

Rachel’s late husband.

Ava’s father.

The child’s fingers began shaking.

But she remembered something Daniel used to say whenever he backed up family photographs.

Important things need two homes.

Ava saved the video to her tablet.

Then she copied it onto the small flash drive attached to her backpack.

👉 Ava entered the fitting room as the child everyone dismissed, but she left carrying proof that could expose the entire family.
