Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY’S FAVORITE DAUGHTER
Vanessa had always been Diane’s golden child.
When Vanessa received poor grades, the teachers were unfair.
When she crashed Diane’s car, the road was dangerous.
When she quit three jobs in one year, every employer had failed to appreciate her.
Rachel received different rules.
At sixteen, she worked evenings to help pay household bills.
At nineteen, she earned a scholarship and was told not to become arrogant.
At twenty-six, she married Daniel Bennett, a quiet electrical engineer who treated Ava as a miracle from the moment she was born.
Diane disliked him immediately.
Daniel noticed the way Diane spoke to Rachel.
He challenged her.
That made him dangerous.
When he died in a highway collision, Rachel spent nine days in the hospital with broken ribs and a head injury.
Daniel had been driving.
Ava, only three, survived because he turned the car at the final second and took the impact on his side.
Rachel remembered almost nothing from the first week after the crash.
Diane handled the funeral.
The insurance forms.
The bank accounts.
She told Rachel that Daniel’s life insurance barely covered the mortgage debt and medical bills.
The family home was sold.
Rachel and Ava moved into a small apartment.
For years, Rachel believed they had simply been unlucky.
She worked while grieving.
She raised Ava while healing.
She never questioned the documents Diane placed before her because she had been too broken to read them.
Vanessa, meanwhile, began living far beyond her income.
Designer bags.
European vacations.
A luxury apartment with no visible rent.
Whenever Rachel asked how she afforded it, Diane said Vanessa understood how to attract opportunities.
“You chose a difficult life,” Diane once told Rachel. “Vanessa chose wisely.”
The cruelty became worse after Ava stopped speaking around them.
At one family dinner, Diane asked Ava to say thank you for a birthday gift.
Ava froze.
Vanessa laughed.
“Maybe she really has nothing going on in there.”
Rachel took Ava home before dessert.
They did not attend another family dinner for almost a year.
But Diane never apologized.
She only complained that Rachel was keeping her granddaughter away.
Now Vanessa was marrying Ethan Caldwell, whose family owned hotels, restaurants, and event properties across the East Coast.
Diane treated the marriage like a victory she had personally earned.
Rachel treated it like another event she needed to survive.
