Chapter 8 - THE BRACELET IN THE RED PURSE

On the morning of the wedding, Rachel entered through the east service door exactly as instructed.
She carried her red dress in a garment bag and Ava’s white dress over one arm.
A security guard directed them through the kitchen.
Wedding guests entered beneath a flower-covered arch in the front lobby.
Ava noticed the difference.
“Are we staff?”
“No.”
“Then why are we back here?”
Rachel knelt beside her.
“Because some people believe making others feel small makes them look important.”
Inside the bridal suite, Vanessa was screaming.
Her veil had torn near the comb.
The boutique seamstress refused to touch it because the lace was handmade and irreplaceable.
Diane saw Rachel and pointed toward the veil.
“Fix it.”
“Good morning to you too.”
“Do you understand how much this cost?”
Rachel examined the tear.
“It can be repaired, but I need an hour.”
“You have twenty minutes.”
Rachel worked beneath a bright lamp while the bridesmaids drank champagne.
Ava sat near the makeup table.
Vanessa’s diamond bracelet lay beside a jewelry box.
After Rachel repaired the veil, she went into the bathroom to change.
Diane followed her.
“You will sit at table twenty-nine.”
“That’s beside the kitchen.”
“It was the only place available.”
“You assigned the seating.”
Diane lowered her voice.
“Remember our agreement.”
“There was no agreement.”
“You attend quietly. You do not speak to Ethan about money.”
Rachel stepped into her red dress.
“I’m not protecting you.”
When they returned to the suite, Vanessa was holding the diamond bracelet.
She looked toward Ava.
“Did you touch this?”
Ava shook her head.
“You were staring at it.”
“She didn’t touch anything,” Rachel said.
Vanessa placed the bracelet back on the table.
“Control your child.”
Minutes later, Rachel left to help Ava button her cardigan.
Neither noticed Vanessa take the bracelet again.
But Ava saw her reflection in the mirror.
Vanessa crossed the room and slipped the bracelet into Rachel’s open red purse.
Ava froze.
Vanessa looked up.
Their eyes met in the mirror.
The bride smiled.
Then she placed one finger against her lips.
Ava’s breathing changed.
She reached inside her pocket and touched the flash drive.

Vanessa had just given her one more secret to expose.
👉 The bride planned to turn Rachel’s poverty into proof of theft, but the child she called useless had witnessed everything.
