Chapter 11 - WHAT THEY DID AFTER DANIEL DIED
The DJ tried to stop the video.
Ethan raised one hand.
“Let it play.”
His voice silenced the ballroom.
On the screen, Diane poured herself champagne.
“Daniel’s policy paid six hundred thousand,” she said. “Rachel was unconscious, and I had temporary authority. Moving it was easy.”
Rachel gripped the edge of the DJ table.
Six hundred thousand dollars.
Diane had told her the policy barely covered funeral expenses.
Vanessa laughed in the recording.
“You should have seen Rachel thanking us for paying the hospital bills.”
Lucas looked uncomfortable.
“And the child’s trust?”
“Still there,” Diane said. “Most of it, anyway.”
“Most?”
“Vanessa needed help with the apartment.”
The bride screamed at the DJ.
“Turn it off!”
Ethan stepped between her and the platform.
“You will not touch that equipment.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“I have been listening.”
On the video, Diane explained that Rachel’s identity had been used to open vendor accounts because poor people were easy to blame.
Then Vanessa said, “After tonight, we place the bracelet in her purse. No one will question missing money once they believe she steals jewelry.”
The entire ballroom erupted.
The security manager immediately placed the bracelet on the table and stepped away from Rachel.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Ava lifted the microphone again.
“I saw her put it there.”
Vanessa stared at her niece.
“You little liar.”
Ava flinched.
Rachel moved in front of her.
“Call my daughter that again.”
Diane rushed toward the stage.
“Rachel, this is a family matter.”
“You stole my husband’s insurance money.”
“You were not capable of managing it.”
“You stole from Ava.”
“We supported you.”
“You made us poor and then punished us for being poor.”
Ethan took out his phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“You cannot cancel everything over a child’s video.”
Ethan looked at her as though he had never seen her before.
“I am not canceling everything over the video.”
He removed his wedding ring.
“I am ending this because the video shows who you are.”
