Chapter 10 - THE SCREEN BEHIND THE BRIDE
Ava climbed onto the DJ platform before Rachel understood what she was doing.
The DJ reached for the microphone.
Ava held it against her chest.
“Please.”
The man saw her tears and stepped back.
Rachel hurried through the crowd.
Vanessa reached the stage first.
“Turn that off right now!”
Ava trembled so violently that the microphone shook in her hands.
Rachel stopped at the edge of the platform.
She wanted to carry her daughter away.
But Ava looked at Ethan.
“The groom needs to see this.”
She handed the flash drive to the DJ.
Vanessa lunged toward the controls.
Ethan caught her arm.
“What is on it?”
“Nothing. She’s a confused child.”
Ava looked at Rachel.
“Dad said important things need two homes.”
Rachel’s chest tightened.
She had not heard Ava repeat Daniel’s words in years.
The DJ inserted the drive.
The ballroom screen came alive.
Vanessa appeared in the bridal suite with Lucas.
The best man pulled her into his arms.
They kissed.
Ethan’s champagne glass struck the table.
Lucas backed toward the exit.
Two of Ethan’s brothers blocked his path.
Vanessa turned toward the guests.
“This is edited!”
The video continued without interruption.
Diane entered the room carrying a black folder.
She discussed vendor accounts.
Ethan’s signature.
Money that would be moved after the wedding.
Then she said Rachel’s name.
“If anything goes wrong, we blame Rachel. Everyone already believes she’s desperate.”
The same guests who had watched security search Rachel’s purse now looked away in shame.
Rachel climbed onto the platform and wrapped both arms around Ava.
“You recorded this?”
Ava nodded.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“You did.”
“I couldn’t make my voice work.”
Rachel kissed her hair.
“You made it work when it mattered.”
On the screen, Vanessa opened the folder.
Rachel’s forged signature appeared on several documents.
Then Lucas asked, “What about the old Bennett account?”
Diane laughed.
“She never found the insurance money. Why would she find this?”
Rachel looked toward the screen.
“What insurance money?”
Diane’s face went blank.
Ava pressed herself against Rachel.
The video had moved beyond the wedding fraud.
