Chapter 5 - The Police Intrusion

Downstairs, the faint sound of sirens grew rapidly louder.
Julian set his crystal wine glass onto the table.
He frowned slightly, looking toward the front curtained windows.
"Why are police sirens sounding on our quiet street?"
Chloe stood up from the sofa, smoothing her dress.
She walked over to the front window glass carefully.
She pulled the linen drapes back two inches fast.
Her eyes widened in sudden, sharp, rising panic.
Three black state police cruisers pulled into their driveway.
Emergency red and blue lights flashed across green lawns.
An emergency ambulance pulled up right behind the police.
"Julian! The police are parking outside our house!"
Chloe screamed out, her voice cracking with sudden fear.
Julian stood up violently, knocking his wine glass over.
Red wine spilled across the white marble counter floor.
"Why would the police be coming to our home?"
Julian ran to the front window, staring outside terrified.
Four armed state police officers stepped out of vehicles.
They carried heavy tactical gear and official court papers.
Officer Miller marched straight toward the front oak door.
Julian's face went from healthy flush to ash gray.
"Did the bank call the authorities about the transfers?"
Chloe stammered out, her hands shaking on her dress.
"No, the bank promised to wait until five o'clock!"
Julian yelled frantically, his voice filled with rising terror.
Heavy, authoritative knocks echoed through the front oak door.
The loud banging rattled the glass panels of entryway.
"State Police! Open the door immediately, Mr. Vance!"
Officer Miller's booming voice rang through the house.
Julian panicked, backing away toward the kitchen hallway door.
"Do not open that door, Chloe!" Julian ordered.
"We need to get Mother out the back entrance!"
Julian sprinted up the carpeted stairs toward the bathroom.
His heavy leather dress shoes thundered on wooden steps.
He intended to grab Margaret and hide her away.
He wanted to bundle her into his car trunk.
He reached the top of the stair landing panting.
He ran down the hallway toward the locked bathroom.
He slammed his heavy fist against the wooden door.
"Elena! Open this door right now!" Julian roared.
