Chapter 2 - The Emergency Call

I raised my smartphone to document every purple mark.
The camera flash lit up the dim bathroom tiles.
I captured close-up photographs of her swollen right wrist.
I photographed the deep rope grooves around her wrists.
My steady hands did not tremble as I worked.
I switched the phone setting from photo to video.
I held Margaret's cold fingers in my left palm.
"Margaret, please state your full name for the record."
Margaret looked directly into the illuminated phone camera lens.
"My name is Margaret Vance," the elderly woman whispered.
"My son Julian tied my arms with heavy rope."
"Chloe slapped my face when I refused to sign."
"They locked me in the dark cellar for days."
Her shaking voice was recorded clearly on the file.
The high-definition microphone captured every single terrified sob.
I saved the digital video file to cloud storage.
I backed up the recording to an encrypted server.
Julian and Chloe could never erase this digital proof.
I opened my personal mobile phone contact list quickly.
My thumb scrolled down to a high-priority contact.
My expression turned stone cold, uncompromising, and unwavering.
I tapped the name of the county chief judge.
The secure phone line connected on the second ring.
"Judge Thorne, this is Attorney Elena Vance speaking now."
My voice carried the unyielding weight of absolute authority.
"I am currently inside Margaret Vance's suburban home."
"I have documented severe physical abuse and felony assault."
"I need an emergency protective order issued immediately today."
"And I need armed state police units dispatched here."
Judge Thorne listened to my urgent report in silence.
"Is the victim in immediate physical danger, Elena?"
"Yes, Your Honor," I replied into the phone.
"The abusers are currently standing in the living room."
"Issue the protective order right now, Judge Thorne."
"Sending tactical police units to your location now, Elena."
I ended the call and placed phone in pocket.
I turned back to Margaret, gently holding her shoulders.
"Help is coming down the road right now, Margaret."
She let out a long, ragged breath of relief.
The heavy coat rested on the porcelain sink counter.
Upstairs, the bathroom was completely quiet and perfectly secure.
