Chapter 1 - The Hidden Bruises

I gently helped elderly Margaret into the quiet bathroom.

Her frail hands trembled beneath her heavy gray coat.

She suddenly grabbed my wrist with a desperate grip.

Her wide hazel eyes filled with pure paralyzing terror.

"Please... don't take off my coat..." Margaret whispered.

Margaret whispered those terrified words with a shaking voice.

Her quivering voice broke my heart into tiny pieces.

I looked down at her pale face with concern.

Why was she wearing a heavy coat indoors today?

The humid summer heat filled the small suburban house.

Downstairs, her controlling son Julian laughed very loudly now.

Beside him stood Chloe in an elegant silk dress.

They were drinking expensive wine in the living room.

They claimed Margaret was resting comfortably in her room.

I knew something was terribly wrong in this house.

I stepped inside and quietly locked the bathroom door.

The brass deadbolt slid shut with a soft click.

I turned back to Margaret and offered a smile.

"You are completely safe with me now, dear Margaret."

I carefully unbuttoned the front of her gray coat.

She flinched back as my fingers touched the buttons.

I slowly slid the heavy wool coat off shoulders.

My breath hitched violently in my throat right away.

My entire body went completely rigid with sheer horror.

Dark purple bruises covered her thin, fragile pale arms.

Deep red rope marks dug brutally into her skin.

Her delicate shoulders were stained with dark yellow marks.

Someone had tied her up with coarse nylon rope.

Someone had beaten her repeatedly behind closed wooden doors.

Tears flooded Margaret's eyes, spilling down her cheeks.

She clutched my hand tightly with her shaking fingers.

"Julian tied me up... Chloe hit me..." she sobbed.

Margaret sobbed out the terrifying truth to my ears.

My blood ran completely ice cold in one second.

Her own son had bound her like a prisoner.

His cold wife Chloe had struck this defenseless woman.

They wore elegant clothes while hiding a horrific crime.

They paraded her around like a senile old woman.

They kept her heavy coat on to hide evidence.

Maternal rage burned inside my chest like hot fire.

I am Elena Vance, a fierce civil rights attorney.

I wore my professional blue blouse to her home.

I came here to inspect her living conditions today.

I never expected to find a violent torture chamber.

I wrapped my arms around Margaret's trembling frail frame.

"They will never touch you ever again," I promised.

I pulled out my sleek black mobile smartphone device.

I opened the camera application with my shaking thumb.

I needed to document every single wound on body.

I needed hard physical evidence to destroy those monsters.

I raised the camera lens to capture her skin.

The bright flash illuminated the dark bruises on shoulders.

Margaret gasped softly, but held still for the camera.

"We are going to make them pay today, Margaret."

I kept my voice quiet, composed, and utterly fierce.
