Chapter 6 - Paramedic Arrival
The wail of sirens echoed down the street.
Red and blue emergency lights flashed through trees.
An emergency medical ambulance pulled into the driveway.
Two uniformed police cruisers stopped right behind it.
Paramedics rushed out the rear ambulance doors fast.
A female paramedic named Sarah ran to Emma.
"Ma'am, where are you feeling the pain?"
Emma pointed to her lower right side ribs.
"My mother-in-law kicked me in the side."
"I am eight months pregnant with my first."
Paramedic Sarah's face went rigid with intense concern.
"We need to get her on gurney now!"
They carefully lifted Emma onto the rolling stretcher.
They strapped her body down securely with warm blankets.
They hooked up a fetal heart monitor unit fast.
The steady, rapid beating sound filled the air.
Thump, thump, thump, thump, echoed across driveway.
"Baby's heart rate is elevated but stable, sir."
Paramedic Sarah reported to me with a reassuring smile.
I let out a long, shuddering breath of relief.
My unborn child was alive and fighting inside.
Two armed police officers stepped up to porch.
Officer Davis carried a black notebook in hand.
He looked at my mother standing in wet satin.
"Mrs. Margaret Brooks, we received a 911 call."
"A report of physical assault on a pregnant female."
Margaret immediately put on a pitiful, grieving face.
She squeezed out fake tears, clutching her chest.
"Officer! Thank God you arrived in time today!"
Margaret cried out in a trembling, fragile voice.
"My daughter-in-law attacked me inside my foyer!"
"She threw a basin of hot water on!"
"My son lost his mind and pushed me!"
"I was defending myself from her violent rage!"
Officer Davis looked between Margaret and my calm face.
He saw Margaret's soaked dress and ruined hair.
"Is this true, sir?" Officer Davis asked me.
I looked Officer Davis straight in the eyes.
