Chapter 9 - The Notary’s Insurance Policy
The notary’s recording was grainy but clear.
Vanessa sat across from him inside a restaurant.
Damien remained partly outside the frame.
Vanessa placed an envelope on the table.
“You are only confirming signatures,” she said.
The notary answered, “Signatures the son never made.”
Damien leaned closer.
“He won’t be in a position to challenge them.”
The notary asked what would happen if Robert defended Daniel.
Vanessa smiled.
“Robert won’t be speaking publicly.”
The video had been recorded three weeks before Daniel’s arrest.
The notary kept it because he feared Vanessa would blame him if the scheme failed.
He also preserved copies of the original documents.
The signatures had been traced from Daniel’s employment contract.
Forensic comparison confirmed it.
The bank login supposedly made from Daniel’s home computer had originated from a remote-access program installed by Damien.
Company technology records showed Damien’s credentials activating the program while Daniel was working in another county.
The cash found in Daniel’s locker came from a withdrawal Vanessa made two days earlier.
Serial numbers matched bank records.
The watch presented the most personal proof.
Police evidence logs showed Vanessa requested its return after Daniel’s conviction.
She claimed Robert needed it.
Three days later, Damien had the watch resized.
The jeweler remembered him because Damien complained that Robert’s wrist had been “too thin.”
Rachel obtained the receipt.
Every piece pointed toward the same conclusion.
Still, Vanessa remained confident.
She held the house.
She controlled most company directors.
She claimed Robert’s recordings had been manipulated by people seeking Daniel’s inheritance.
Damien issued a public statement.
“My stepbrother served his sentence and now wants to profit from our father’s death.”
Daniel refused interviews.
He spent his days helping Rachel organize Robert’s ledger.
The ledger identified dates, accounts, conversations, and witnesses.
Robert had written beside one entry:
DAMIEN DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT LOWER VAULT.
The lower vault referred to a hidden safe beneath Hale Restoration’s original workshop.
Daniel remembered helping Robert install the floor years earlier.
The building had since been sold to a property company controlled by Vanessa.
Rachel obtained a search warrant.
Inside the vault, investigators found original purchasing invoices from Heritage Materials Group.
They showed Damien’s shell company charging Hale Restoration triple market prices.
They also found an unsigned revision to Robert’s trust.
The revision removed Vanessa and Damien from all inheritance rights if fraud against Daniel was proven.
Robert had signed it before two witnesses.
Vanessa claimed the document was fake.
One witness was dead.
The other had disappeared after Robert’s supposed funeral.
The missing witness was the attorney who helped hide Robert.
Rachel traced her last credit-card transaction to a roadside motel in Kentucky.
Her vehicle had been found abandoned nearby.
Daniel stared at the report.
“Did they kill her too?”
“We don’t know.”
Then the caretaker called.
Someone had broken into the mausoleum.
