Chapter 14 - The House Vanessa Filled With Lies
Daniel returned to the family house with Rachel and a court-appointed property officer.
The lock Vanessa installed was removed.
Daniel used the old iron key only on the inner study door.
Robert had designed it to open both the mausoleum chamber and a hidden compartment inside the house.
Behind the study bookshelf, they found additional records.
Vanessa had missed them.
The compartment contained Robert’s original will, property photographs, and a letter addressed to Daniel.
The house is yours, but no building is worth becoming cruel to keep.
Daniel read the sentence twice.
Rooms throughout the property had been changed.
His mother’s photographs were stored in the attic.
Robert’s clothes had been sold or discarded.
Damien converted Daniel’s bedroom into a home gym.
Vanessa had placed legal documents inside the dining room cabinet showing she planned to sell the property to a developer.
The sale was scheduled three weeks after Daniel’s release.
She expected him to remain too poor and discredited to challenge it.
Daniel walked into the backyard.
The maple memorial garden for his mother was gone.
The swimming pool covered most of the land.
For several minutes, anger made the entire house feel poisoned.
He considered tearing everything out.
Selling it.
Letting strangers erase the final connection.
Then Samuel Bell joined him.
The caretaker stood near the pool.
“Your father regretted losing the garden.”
“So do I.”
“He said graves are for the living. The dead don’t need us to be trapped beside them.”
Daniel looked toward the house.
“What am I supposed to do with this place?”
Samuel shrugged.
“That sounds like a question for someone who restores buildings.”
Daniel almost smiled.
He had spent his career saving structures without pretending damage had never happened.
The house could be treated the same way.
He restored his mother’s photographs.
He returned Robert’s cane to the study.
He kept the new lock as evidence but did not reinstall it.
The pool remained.
Destroying it would not return the garden.
Instead, Daniel planned a new memorial area beside the workshop using cuttings from the original maple tree.
A neighbor had preserved one after Damien removed it.
The house became temporary evidence property until the criminal trial ended.
Daniel lived in a small apartment above the old workshop.
He preferred it.
The place smelled of timber and stone rather than Vanessa’s perfume.
Then the forensic accountant called.
Hale Restoration’s final operating account contained less than $90,000.
Payroll was due in five days.
Damien had moved the remaining customer deposits offshore.
