Chapter 16 - The Trial for Robert Hale
Vanessa and Damien were tried together.
The prosecution charged them with conspiracy, financial fraud, evidence fabrication, poisoning, obstruction, and the murder of Robert Hale.
Their attorneys blamed each other.
Vanessa claimed Damien created the theft scheme without her knowledge.
Damien claimed Vanessa manipulated him to protect her position in the family.
The evidence showed partnership.
The notary recording captured both.
Bank transfers enriched both.
The false death notice carried Vanessa’s authorization.
The private-care video showed Damien entering Robert’s room.
Visitor records placed Vanessa nearby.
A toxicologist testified that the fatal dose entered Robert’s body within the same time window.
The prosecutor played the hallway recording.
Vanessa demanding Robert’s signature.
Damien telling him Daniel would return to nothing.
Robert refusing.
Then came the recovered facility video.
Damien carried a black medication bag into the room.
He remained inside for seven minutes.
After he left, Vanessa entered.
She closed the curtain.
Robert’s cardiac alarm sounded twenty-three minutes later.
The defense argued that Damien brought legitimate medicine.
No prescription matched the drug found in Robert’s body.
A nurse testified that Vanessa ordered staff not to call an ambulance immediately.
She claimed Robert had a do-not-resuscitate order.
The order was forged.
Daniel testified for two days.
Vanessa’s attorney asked why Robert hid rather than contact police openly.
“Because she had already used forged documents to send me to prison.”
“You expect this jury to believe she controlled everyone?”
“No. I expect them to look at the people she paid, threatened, or deceived.”
Damien’s attorney accused Daniel of wanting the company and house.
Daniel answered, “They were already mine under the trust. I lost five years because your client wanted them sooner.”
The attorney displayed Daniel’s prison disciplinary record.
One argument in the workshop.
A refusal to return to his cell after learning Robert died.
Daniel did not deny either.
“I was angry.”
“So you have a temper.”
“Yes.”
“Could that anger make you blame innocent people?”
Daniel looked toward the jury.
“Anger is not evidence. The recordings are.”
Rachel called Robert’s attorney last.
She explained the hidden care facility, memorial container, trust revision, and final medical samples.
Vanessa stared at her throughout the testimony.
When asked why she had not come forward sooner, the attorney described the forced-road incident and threats against her children.
“I was afraid,” she said. “Robert was not.”
The prosecution played Robert’s final words.
“My son will come home. Make sure there is still truth waiting for him.”
