Chapter 7 - The Recording Beneath the Mausoleum
The metal box contained three encrypted drives.
A handwritten ledger.
Medical records.
Copies of Daniel’s prison letters.
Every envelope had been opened before reaching Robert.
Vanessa had written notes across several.
DO NOT SHOW HIM.
RETURN TO SENDER.
One letter had been torn in half.
Robert had taped it back together.
Daniel sat on the stone bench and covered his face.
Rachel gave him time.
When he was ready, she connected the first drive to a secure laptop.
Robert appeared on the screen.
He sat inside the mausoleum chamber with a blanket over his knees.
“Daniel,” he began, “I am sorry.”
Daniel’s shoulders shook.
Robert explained that after Daniel’s arrest, he doubted the evidence almost immediately.
The watch found in Daniel’s toolbox had been on Robert’s wrist the night before police searched the property.
Only Vanessa and Damien had entered his bedroom.
Robert attempted to contact Daniel’s lawyer.
Vanessa intercepted the call.
The following morning, Robert became ill after drinking medication Margaret—Vanessa’s private nurse—prepared for him.
He collapsed.
At the hospital, Vanessa restricted visitors and claimed stress had caused a cardiac episode.
Robert remained conscious but heavily sedated.
A statement accusing Daniel was brought to his bed.
He refused to sign it.
Vanessa guided his hand while he was medicated.
The signature was filmed from an angle that made it appear voluntary.
“I never called you my biological son,” Robert said in the recording. “You were my son. No qualifier was ever necessary.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Robert later overheard Vanessa and Damien discussing the trial.
They needed Daniel convicted because Robert’s trust contained a family-protection clause.
If Daniel was accused but not convicted, control of Hale Restoration remained with Robert and an independent trustee.
If Daniel was convicted of stealing from the company, his inheritance rights could be suspended.
Damien would become the next eligible beneficiary.
Vanessa had not framed Daniel simply to hide her own theft.
She needed a conviction to transfer the estate.
Robert contacted an old attorney through a hospital orderly.
He agreed to pretend his health had worsened.
A false public death notice was created after he was moved secretly to a private facility.
The obituary gave Vanessa confidence.
She transferred the house and company.
Robert used those transactions to trace every participant.
Then he spoke the sentence Daniel had waited five years to hear.
“My son is innocent.”
The second drive contained bank evidence.
The third was labeled:
IF MY DEATH IS CALLED NATURAL.
Rachel paused before opening it.
“The medical examiner never reviewed your father’s body.”
“Why?”
“Because Vanessa reported an out-of-state cremation.”
Daniel looked toward the urn.
“Are those his ashes?”
Rachel answered carefully.
“We haven’t confirmed that yet.”
The third recording began.
Robert looked weaker.
“If this video is being watched, I did not survive long enough to testify.”
He took a breath.
