Chapter 12 - Where Robert Chose to Rest
The sealed envelope contained a map drawn in Robert’s hand.
It showed the original Hale Restoration workshop before Damien sold it.
A blue X marked the foundation beneath Robert’s first stone-cutting bench.
Daniel remembered the bench.
Robert built it from oak salvaged from an old courthouse.
When the workshop was sold, Daniel assumed everything had been removed.
The property’s new owner had preserved the original work floor as part of a historic renovation.
Police obtained permission to search.
Beneath a removable foundation stone, they found a stainless-steel memorial container.
Inside were Robert’s ashes, a second recording, and a handwritten statement signed by the attorney who helped him.
Robert had chosen the workshop because it was the place where he and Daniel spent the most honest years of their lives.
He did not trust Vanessa with his burial.
He did not want Damien controlling access to his grave.
The second recording was quieter than the first.
Robert struggled to breathe.
“I wanted to be buried beside Daniel’s mother,” he said. “Vanessa destroyed that garden before I could return.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
Robert continued.
“So I chose the place where my son first learned that broken things can be repaired without pretending they were never damaged.”
The attorney’s statement explained Robert’s final weeks.
Vanessa discovered the private facility through a bribed employee.
She visited Robert twice.
During the first visit, she demanded that he sign permanent control of the company and house to her.
He refused.
During the second, Damien accompanied her.
Robert became critically ill hours later.
The attorney suspected medication poisoning but could not prove it in time.
Robert died the following morning.
The attorney secretly arranged cremation.
She hid the remains and recordings.
Then she began preparing to testify.
Before she could contact prosecutors, someone forced her vehicle off the road.
She survived.
Terrified, she entered a witness-protection arrangement connected to another financial case.
Rachel had recently located her.
She entered the courtroom through a side door.
Vanessa stood so abruptly that officers restrained her.
The attorney identified both Vanessa and Damien as the people who visited Robert before his fatal collapse.
She also produced an audio recording made from the hallway outside his room.
Vanessa’s voice said:
“Sign it, Robert. Daniel is gone, and you’re already dead to everyone who matters.”
Robert answered:
“He’ll come home.”
Damien laughed.
“Not to anything you own.”
The recording ended with Robert refusing.
The following morning, he died.
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“Where is his real grave?”
Now he had the answer.
His father had hidden himself beneath the workshop to keep his final truth away from her.
The judge vacated Daniel’s conviction.
The charges against him were dismissed with prejudice.
