Chapter 15 - The Workers Who Came Back
Daniel called every remaining employee into the original workshop.
Only twenty-seven still worked for Hale Restoration.
At its peak, the company employed more than two hundred.
Daniel stood beside Robert’s old bench.
“I cannot promise this company survives.”
No one interrupted.
“Damien took customer deposits. Equipment has been sold. Several contracts may be canceled. If anyone needs to leave for a stable job, I will understand.”
The oldest project supervisor raised his hand.
“What happens if we stay?”
“We open every account. We tell every customer the truth. We finish only the projects we can complete safely.”
“And payroll?”
“I can cover one week from my wrongful-conviction advance.”
Rachel objected from the back of the room.
Daniel looked toward her.
“It’s my decision.”
She nodded reluctantly.
Several workers left that afternoon.
Daniel did not blame them.
Nineteen remained.
They contacted customers personally.
Some canceled.
Others had worked with Robert and agreed to revised schedules.
A historic theater project provided an emergency deposit after the owner learned Daniel had been exonerated.
The state appointed a receiver to recover the offshore funds.
One bank froze Damien’s accounts before the money could disappear completely.
Daniel rehired the accountant Vanessa had fired.
She reconstructed the books.
The company’s greatest liability was unpaid pension contributions.
Daniel refused to ignore them.
“Workers get paid before I do.”
For six months, Daniel took no salary.
He lived above the workshop.
He restored small projects with his own hands.
The work quieted the part of his mind that still woke expecting a prison count.
He also attended counseling for wrongful-conviction trauma.
At first, he hated the word trauma.
It made him feel as though Vanessa still controlled him.
The counselor corrected him.
“Recognizing damage gives you choices about repair. It does not give the person who caused it ownership.”
Daniel understood that language.
Repair.
Choice.
Structure.
Hale Restoration slowly stabilized.
The company completed the theater project on time.
A courthouse hired them after Daniel disclosed every financial risk openly.
Former employees began returning.
Daniel created an independent purchasing review so no family member could secretly control vendors again.
The company trust was revised.
No heir could gain control merely through marriage or blood.
Employees received voting representation.
Daniel did not want another Damien waiting for a death or conviction.
Meanwhile, prosecutors prepared the case against Vanessa and Damien.
Toxicology experts could prove Robert was poisoned.
The question was who administered the fatal dose.
Then investigators recovered a deleted video from the private care facility.
It showed Damien entering Robert’s room carrying a medication bag.
