Chapter 10 - The Empty Urn
Daniel reached Evergreen after police had secured the mausoleum.
The iron door showed fresh damage.
The forensic container was safe because Rachel had already removed it.
The drives and ledger were in evidence storage.
Only the urn had been taken.
Samuel Bell stood outside beneath a blanket while paramedics checked a bruise on his head.
He had confronted a masked man near the mausoleum and been pushed down.
Daniel knelt beside him.
“You should have let him go.”
Samuel looked offended.
“Your father told me to guard that room.”
“The evidence was already gone.”
“The urn mattered.”
Daniel looked toward the open chamber.
“Do you know what was inside?”
Samuel nodded.
Robert’s attorney had explained it before leaving the urn.
The remains were not Robert’s.
The urn contained concrete dust from the old mausoleum restoration.
It was a decoy.
Robert’s actual ashes had been placed somewhere else because he feared Vanessa would seek control of them or destroy evidence connected to his death.
“Where?”
Samuel looked at the blue ribbon still tied around Daniel’s key.
“Your father said you would know when you were ready.”
Daniel examined the ribbon again.
A tiny pattern had been embroidered near one edge.
Three maple leaves.
His mother used to sew that symbol into family blankets.
One remained inside the old brick house.
Robert had restored a small memorial garden for Daniel’s mother behind the workshop.
Her ashes were buried beneath a maple tree.
Daniel realized Robert may have wanted to rest beside her.
But the garden had been excavated after Daniel’s conviction.
Damien built a swimming pool over part of it.
Daniel’s anger became so sharp he could barely breathe.
Rachel placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Do not go there alone.”
A security camera near Evergreen captured the intruder’s vehicle.
It belonged to a Hale Restoration subcontractor.
The driver was arrested.
He admitted Damien paid him to retrieve the urn.
Damien believed Robert’s ashes might contain toxicology evidence.
The contractor did not know the urn was fake.
He delivered it to a warehouse owned by Vanessa.
Police recovered it beside a furnace.
Vanessa and Damien had been preparing to destroy it.
The attempted evidence destruction allowed Rachel to request emergency arrest warrants.
Damien was detained first.
He still wore Robert’s watch.
Vanessa was arrested at the family house while attempting to leave with suitcases and financial files.
News cameras filmed officers leading her through the new door she had closed in Daniel’s face.
She shouted that Daniel was a convicted criminal manipulating prosecutors.
Rachel filed the motion to vacate before midnight.
The judge scheduled an evidentiary hearing.
Daniel would return to court in prison clothing because he remained under the legal custody of the original sentence until the conviction was formally overturned.
He hated the orange uniform.
Rachel reminded him why he would wear it one final time.
