Chapter 9 - Three Days in the Dark

The cellar was colder than Mia expected.
At first, she shouted.
She kicked the door.
She screamed Harper’s name.
No one came.
The wine racks were bolted to the stone walls.
Her wrists were tied too tightly to slip free.
A narrow drain ran beneath one shelf.
Condensation gathered on a copper pipe above it.
Mia shifted beneath the pipe and caught drops of water against her lips.
It was not enough.
But it kept her conscious.
Hours passed.
Then footsteps approached.
The small viewing panel opened.
Claire looked inside.
“Dominic called.”
Mia raised her head.
“What did you tell him?”
“That you stole from us and abandoned your daughter.”
“He won’t believe you.”
“He already believed Nathan.”
Claire held up the silver bird pendant.
The wing was open.
“Where is the key?”
Mia said nothing.
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“Your daughter has it.”
Fear cut through Mia’s exhaustion.
“Leave her alone.”
“Then tell me what the key opens.”
“You already found the card.”
“The card is encrypted.”
Lucas had protected the files.
The brass key was not only physical.
A number engraved along its edge formed part of the password.
Harper had unknowingly carried the missing piece.
Mia understood why Claire had not harmed the child.
They needed what Harper had.
Claire crouched outside the viewing panel.
“Nathan says Lucas begged too.”
Mia lunged toward the door despite her bound hands.
Claire flinched backward.
The panel closed.
Mia sat in darkness, shaking with rage.
Above the cellar, Harper hid the brass key inside her toy rabbit.
Claire told the household Mia had fled after stealing jewelry.
Harper screamed that it was a lie.
Nathan ordered staff not to indulge her “fantasy.”
The cook secretly gave Harper food.
The child refused to sleep.
She searched every room Mia might have entered.
On the second night, she found her mother’s shoe near the basement staircase.
On the third morning, she heard a faint sound beneath the floor.
Three slow knocks.
Then two.
Then three again.
Mia and Harper had used the pattern during hide-and-seek.
Harper pressed her ear against the stone.
“Mommy?”
A weak knock answered.
Harper ran toward the security office.
Nathan intercepted her.
“What did you hear?”
She stared at him.
“Nothing.”
It was the first lie Harper had ever told an adult.

That afternoon, Dominic’s helicopter appeared above the estate.
👉 Harper knew Nathan would stop her if she spoke openly, so she waited until Dominic was alone and pulled him toward the basement by his coat.
