Chapter 1 - The Door Harper Found

“Mommy’s in there.”

Harper’s tiny voice echoed through the stone corridor beneath Dominic Vale’s Hudson Valley estate.

The five-year-old stood barefoot beside him, gripping the hem of his black suit. Her eyes were swollen from crying. One shaking finger pointed toward a steel wine-cellar door secured with a new brass padlock.

Dominic stared at the lock.

He had returned from Atlantic City less than twenty minutes earlier.

His fiancée, Claire, had told him Mia quit without warning.

Nathan, his most trusted adviser, claimed the maid had stolen jewelry and disappeared.

Harper told a different story.

“My mommy didn’t leave me.”

A guard lifted a bolt cutter.

Nathan stood several feet behind them, his jaw tight.

“Dominic, we should call security before damaging—”

“Cut it.”

The lock snapped.

Dominic pushed the door open.

Cold, damp air poured into the corridor.

Mia lay against a wooden wine rack, her wrists tied behind her back. Her uniform was torn and dirty. Her lips were cracked from dehydration.

A silver bird pendant rested against her chest.

“Mia.”

Dominic crossed the room in two strides.

Harper ran past him and dropped beside her mother.

“Mommy!”

Mia pressed her cheek against Harper’s hair. She was too weak to lift her arms.

Dominic cut the ropes and covered her with his coat.

Nathan entered the doorway.

“My God,” he said. “Who did this?”

Mia heard his voice.

Her entire body stiffened.

She looked past Dominic with naked fear.

“Nathan knew.”

The room became silent.

Dominic noticed a cracked phone beneath the lowest wine shelf. Its dim screen displayed one unfinished message.

CLAIRE SAID KEEP HER QUIET.

Dominic turned toward Nathan.

Upstairs, a woman’s heels clicked across the stone floor.

Security monitors inside the control room suddenly replayed footage from three nights earlier.

Claire and Nathan were shown dragging Mia toward the cellar.

A guard locked every estate gate.

Nathan stepped backward.

Then Claire’s voice floated down the staircase.

“Dominic?”

Dominic rose and placed himself between Mia, Harper and the door.

He looked toward the stairs with Mia’s broken phone in his hand.

But the message on its screen was only the beginning.
