Chapter 14 - The Guard Who Closed the File
The name on the final recording was Vincent Rusk.
Vincent had served as estate security chief for twelve years.
He was the man who appeared when Nathan caught Mia inside the archive.
The man she almost trusted.
Lucas’s recording captured Vincent accepting money to erase vehicle footage from the night of the crash.
Recent logs showed Vincent also disabled the visible cellar cameras before Mia was imprisoned.
Dominic summoned him to the hospital conference room.
Sheriff’s investigators waited in the next room.
Vincent entered confidently.
“You called?”
Dominic placed Lucas’s photograph on the table.
Vincent’s confidence weakened.
“Where did you get that?”
“Why did you erase the road footage?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Dominic played the recording.
Vincent’s younger voice filled the room.
The steering job is handled. The road camera will be dark from eleven to midnight.
Vincent sat slowly.
“Nathan said Lucas was stealing from the family.”
“And that justified killing him?”
“I didn’t touch the car.”
“You cleared the road.”
Vincent looked toward the door.
“The Vale family has done worse.”
Dominic absorbed the accusation.
It was true.
His father ruled through fear.
Dominic had inherited men trained to treat law as an inconvenience.
But inheritance did not remove choice.
“You’re right,” Dominic said.
Vincent looked surprised.
“My family created a system where men like Nathan could hide behind loyalty.”
Dominic opened the door.
Deputies entered.
Vincent rose.
“You’ll destroy your father’s legacy.”
Dominic looked toward Mia’s hospital room.
“Some legacies deserve to end.”
Vincent was arrested for obstruction, conspiracy and evidence tampering.
Several guards were questioned.
Most had followed Nathan’s orders without knowing Mia was inside the cellar.
Two admitted hearing sounds but accepted the explanation that old pipes were shifting.
Their silence cost them their jobs.
The estate was temporarily closed as a crime scene.
Employees were relocated and interviewed.
Claire’s lawyers attempted to portray her as Nathan’s manipulated victim.
Her messages showed otherwise.
She had selected the cellar because its steel door blocked sound.
She ordered the new lock.
She instructed staff to tell Harper that Mia abandoned her.
One message to Nathan read:
If the child keeps asking, send her to boarding school after the wedding.
Dominic read it only once.
He asked that Harper never see it.
Mia did.
Her grief became anger.
“She wanted to take my daughter too.”
Dominic answered, “She will never come near either of you again.”
But Mia did not want promises based on his power.
She wanted court orders.
