Chapter 13 - Lucas’s Final Bank Box
The storage code led to a private bank in Poughkeepsie.
Lucas had rented the box under Mia’s maiden name.
The silver bird key opened it.
Mia entered the vault with Dominic, her attorney and a sheriff’s investigator.
Inside the box were three items.
A second memory card.
A sealed letter.
And a photograph of Lucas standing beside Dominic’s mother, Alessandra Vale.
Dominic stared at it.
“My mother knew him.”
Mia opened the letter.
Lucas explained that Alessandra had hired him to audit Vale Maritime after suspecting Nathan was diverting money.
Nathan had been raised beside Dominic.
His father served Dominic’s father.
The families treated him like blood.
That trust gave Nathan access no outsider possessed.
Lucas traced millions into hidden accounts.
Some funded Nathan’s personal investments.
Others paid corrupt officials and private enforcers without Dominic’s knowledge.
Alessandra planned to confront him.
She died before she could.
Her death had been attributed to a stroke.
Lucas became suspicious when Nathan ordered him to delete the audit.
He copied everything.
Two weeks later, his car went off the road.
The second memory card contained bank records, recordings and a voice memo Lucas created the morning he died.
Nathan threatened me last night. If anything happens, the transfer orders prove motive.
Another recording captured Nathan speaking with a mechanic he paid to damage Lucas’s steering system.
The mechanic’s name matched a man who disappeared shortly after the crash.
Mia covered her mouth.
For six years, she had told Harper that her father died in an accident.
Now she heard his fear in his own voice.
Dominic looked physically ill.
Nathan had served beside him at Lucas’s funeral.
He had placed an envelope of money in Mia’s hand and called it family support.
That money had bought her silence without her understanding.
The records also connected Claire to the scheme.
She entered Nathan’s financial network before meeting Dominic publicly.
Her engagement to Dominic had been arranged, not romantic.
Nathan selected her because she could gain access to Dominic’s home, schedule and trust documents.
Their messages revealed they were lovers.
Claire never intended to marry Dominic for long.
She intended to become his widow.
Dominic closed the file.
He did not shout.
He did not threaten revenge.
He asked the investigator, “Is this enough?”
“For kidnapping, fraud and attempted murder, yes.”
“And Lucas?”
“With corroboration, it may support murder charges.”
Mia looked at Dominic.
“You cannot handle this privately.”
“I won’t.”
