Chapter 11 - Claire Came Downstairs

Claire appeared at the top of the cellar staircase.
She wore a white dress and carried herself like the future lady of the estate.
“Dominic, what is happening?”
He stood between her and Mia.
Nathan remained near the cellar entrance, calculating whether he could run.
Dominic lifted the cracked phone.
“You tell me.”
Claire looked at the message on its screen.
CLAIRE SAID KEEP HER QUIET.
Her expression barely changed.
“Anyone could have typed that.”
“The security footage shows you bringing her here.”
Claire looked toward the guard.
“What footage?”
The backup system had restored files after Dominic’s arrival.
Nathan had disabled the visible cameras.
He had not known Dominic’s late father installed a second archive after an earlier betrayal.
The guard played the clip on a tablet.
Claire.
Nathan.
Mia struggling between them.
The new padlock.
Claire’s face lost color.
“She was stealing.”
“So you tied her up for three days?”
“She threatened us.”
“With what?”
Nathan stepped forward.
“She discovered sensitive financial information and tried to extort the family.”
Mia weakly lifted her head from Dominic’s coat.
“You killed Lucas.”
Dominic turned toward Nathan.
Claire immediately spoke.
“She is dehydrated. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Harper crawled beside her mother and placed the brass key in Mia’s palm.
Mia closed her fingers around it.
Nathan saw.
He moved toward them.
Dominic’s guard blocked him.
“Give me the key,” Nathan said.
Harper pressed herself against Mia.
Dominic looked at him.
“You’re very interested in a child’s toy.”
Nathan forced a laugh.
“It may belong to the estate.”
Dominic opened the silver bird.
He saw the engraved numbers on the key.
Lucas had used a Vale cipher system known only to senior finance personnel.
Nathan knew exactly what it could unlock.
Dominic ordered the estate gates sealed.
Claire’s composure finally broke.
“You cannot hold me here.”
“I can preserve a crime scene.”
“You are not the police.”
Dominic took out his phone.
For most of his life, the Vale family had handled betrayal privately.
That tradition had created men like Nathan.
Dominic called the county sheriff.
“I have a kidnapping victim, security footage and two suspects inside my home.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You’re calling law enforcement into Vale property?”
“Yes.”
“You know what they’ll find.”
Dominic’s voice became cold.
“Then perhaps it is time they find it.”
May you like
Sirens sounded beyond the locked gates.
👉 Dominic chose public justice over family secrecy, but opening Lucas’s encrypted files threatened to expose crimes committed under the Vale name as well.
