Chapter 19 - The Question Harper Asked
Dominic and Mia moved slowly.
Months passed before a second dinner.
Nearly a year passed before Dominic held her hand.
Harper noticed everything.
One afternoon, she found Dominic repairing a loose hinge at the recovery center.
“You’re rich,” she said.
“I’m less rich than I used to be.”
“You could pay somebody.”
“I could.”
“Why are you doing it?”
“Your mother said this door needs to open properly.”
Harper considered that.
“Are you going to marry her?”
Dominic dropped the screwdriver.
“Has she said that?”
“No.”
“Then I think we should let her decide.”
Harper nodded seriously.
“That’s a good answer.”
Mia had heard from the hallway.
The response mattered more than any expensive promise.
Nathan had viewed people as assets.
Claire viewed marriage as access.
Dominic was learning that love required room for refusal.
On the third anniversary of Mia’s rescue, the center held a memorial for Lucas.
His photograph was placed beside Alessandra Vale’s.
The restored financial records showed that together, they had tried to expose Nathan before anyone else understood the danger.
Harper stood at the microphone.
“My daddy left us a bird,” she said. “The bird had a key. The key helped people know he told the truth.”
Mia cried openly.
Dominic remained beside her but did not touch her until she reached for him.
After the ceremony, Harper gave Dominic a drawing.
It showed three people and a silver bird above them.
“Is this us?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“What is the bird doing?”
“Watching the door.”
Dominic framed the picture in his new office.
That evening, he returned the original silver pendant to Mia.
She had allowed investigators to keep it until every appeal ended.
“The bird belongs to Harper someday,” Mia said.
“When she’s ready.”
Dominic took out a small ring box.
Mia’s breath stopped.
He did not open it immediately.
“I’m not asking because I protected you,” he said. “You protected yourself and Harper long before I understood anything.”
Mia remained silent.
“I’m asking because the life I want is one where your answer matters more than my expectation.”
He opened the box.
The ring was simple.
No Vale crest.
No family diamond.
Mia looked toward Harper, who was pretending not to watch from the doorway.
Then she looked at Dominic.
“Yes.”
