Chapter 17 - The Cellar in Court
The courtroom displayed a large photograph of the steel cellar door.
The brass lock rested inside an evidence bag.
Mia took the witness stand.
Nathan watched her without emotion.
Claire looked away.
The prosecutor began with Mia’s employment.
Her discovery of Lucas’s name.
The pendant.
The forged documents.
Then the night Nathan blocked the service exit.
“What happened to your daughter?” the prosecutor asked.
“They pulled her away while she screamed.”
“And what happened to you?”
“They tied my hands and locked me in the cellar.”
“How long were you there?”
“Three days.”
“Did anyone provide food or water?”
“No.”
“How did you survive?”
“Condensation from a pipe.”
The jury became still.
Nathan’s attorney suggested Mia entered the cellar voluntarily to steal wine and later created a kidnapping story.
The security video played.
Nathan dragging her.
Claire holding the door.
Savannah carrying rope.
The attorney changed direction.
“You had been investigating Mr. Shaw for weeks.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted revenge for your husband.”
“I wanted to know why he died.”
“You secretly copied private documents.”
“Yes.”
“So you broke the law.”
“I preserved evidence of fraud and murder.”
The prosecutor later played Lucas’s final voice memo.
Mia’s composure nearly broke.
She looked toward Harper’s drawing tucked inside her folder.
A silver bird flying through an open door.
She continued.
Dominic testified next.
Nathan’s attorney accused him of sacrificing loyal employees to avoid prosecution.
Dominic did not deny his own history.
“I led an organization that relied on secrecy and fear.”
“Then why should anyone believe you?”
“They shouldn’t believe me because of my name. They should believe the independent records.”
He admitted his family failed Lucas.
He admitted Mia had been placed in danger inside his home.
He admitted Harper found the truth adults ignored.
Claire’s attorney argued she feared Nathan.
The prosecution played Claire’s message.
Use the cellar. The child won’t find the door.
Claire lowered her head.
Nathan was convicted of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, financial fraud and obstruction.
Claire was convicted of kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, child endangerment and fraud.
Vincent and Savannah received separate sentences based on their roles.
Mia did not celebrate.
Justice did not return Lucas.
But it gave Harper a truthful answer.
Her father had not abandoned them.
