Chapter 15 - Protection Without Ownership

Dominic offered Mia a guarded cottage on another Vale property.
She declined.
“I don’t want another home where your people control the gate.”
“The guards would protect you.”
“The guards outside the cellar thought they were protecting the estate.”
Dominic had no answer.
Mia accepted temporary housing arranged through the prosecutor’s victim-services office.
The location was confidential.
Even Dominic was not told the address.
He respected the boundary.
Harper struggled with nightmares.
She woke crying that her mother was behind a door.
Mia began sleeping beside her.
A child therapist helped Harper understand that she had done nothing wrong by waiting for Dominic.
“You were little,” the therapist said. “The dangerous adults were responsible.”
Harper asked whether Mr. Dom was dangerous too.
Mia paused.
“Sometimes he has been.”
“Is he dangerous to us?”
“Not now.”
Dominic heard about the question later.
It affected him more than any accusation from prosecutors.
He began dismantling the private structures that allowed the Vale organization to operate outside ordinary law.
Illegal lending stopped.
Enforcement crews were disbanded.
Several criminal partnerships ended.
The transition created enemies.
One former ally threatened Mia, believing she had weakened Dominic.
Dominic gave the message directly to law enforcement instead of sending armed men.
The sender was arrested on an outstanding weapons charge.
Mia noticed the difference.
Dominic was not becoming harmless.
He was becoming accountable.
He also established a restitution fund for employees harmed by Nathan’s theft.
Lucas’s lost wages and death benefits were calculated.
Mia refused charity but accepted compensation legally owed to Harper.
“It belongs to her father’s work,” she said.
Dominic agreed.
He never used the money to demand access to them.
Claire and Nathan remained in custody.
Their attorneys argued Dominic had manipulated evidence to protect himself.
Mia’s testimony, Lucas’s recordings, hospital evidence and independent security archives made that claim difficult to sustain.
Nathan eventually requested a meeting with Mia.
He offered information about Lucas’s final hours in exchange for her asking prosecutors to reduce the murder charge.
Mia declined to see him.
She sent one sentence through her attorney.
My husband already told the truth. I don’t need his killer to explain it.
Nathan’s offer disappeared.
Then Claire requested a separate deal.
She claimed Nathan had forced her into the conspiracy.
Prosecutors showed Mia the cooperation proposal.
Mia found a hidden condition.
