Chapter 8 - THE BUILDINGS BEFORE THE FIRE
Cross Holdings’ audit covered twelve years of Hartwell contracts.
The hotel fire was not an isolated failure.
Hartwell had certified blocked exits at a nursing facility.
Approved defective alarms in an apartment tower.
Signed incomplete sprinkler tests at a children’s theater.
No major deaths occurred in those buildings, but several incidents came dangerously close.
Vivian’s husband had created the system.
Hartwell submitted low bids, skipped expensive tests and paid inspectors to overlook problems.
When qualified employees objected, the company used junior workers’ credentials.
Elena was not the only person whose name had been copied.
She was the easiest person to blame after the hotel fire because she was young, injured and financially dependent on Vivian.
The audit also showed Vivian took over financial operations two years before the fire.
She approved payments to the employees who altered reports.
Her signature appeared on bonuses issued after each questionable certification.
Vivian claimed she never understood the technical purpose.
Samuel produced emails in which she asked:
Can we reuse Elena’s authorization on the Cross property? She is family and will not challenge us.
Vivian looked toward Clara.
Clara stared at the table.
The wedding guests who worked for Cross Holdings began receiving secure notices from the legal department.
Any employee involved in the financial schemes was placed on immediate administrative leave.
No one was terminated merely for laughing.
But several executives who had concealed Hartwell’s records were removed from company systems pending investigation.
Daniel addressed the ballroom.
“This is not about punishing bad manners with corporate power.”
He looked toward Elena.
“This is about fraud, retaliation and the exploitation of a survivor.”
Elena appreciated the distinction.
She did not want employees terrified that the owner’s bride controlled their careers.
She wanted the truth protected by process.
Vivian attempted to leave with the silver box.
An investigator stopped her and requested the agreement as evidence.
“This is Elena’s property,” Vivian said.
Elena answered:
“No. My signature is not your property anymore.”
Clara turned on Vivian.
“You told me the old reports were gone.”
Vivian’s face changed.
The statement was quiet.
Samuel heard it.
So did the investigator.
Clara had just revealed knowledge of the destruction effort.
She immediately asked for an attorney.
The wedding reception ended early.
But before the guests departed, Daniel asked Elena whether she wanted the first dance.
Her scars were uncovered.
Her aunt was being questioned.
Her family history was collapsing around her.
Elena looked at the empty dance floor.
