Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY’S NEW STORY
Vivian told Elena that Daniel was using romance to control the fire case.
“He needs you emotionally dependent before trial.”
“There is no trial.”
“There will be if you stop cooperating.”
Clara was less subtle.
“Do you honestly think a man like him wants a woman who looks like you?”
Elena walked out.
That night, Vivian called Daniel directly.
She claimed Elena experienced unstable attachments after the fire.
She said Elena had once threatened to accuse innocent people when she felt abandoned.
Daniel recorded the call.
He asked Vivian why Elena’s medical settlement paid Clara’s housing expenses.
Vivian hung up.
After that, Hartwell began destroying records.
Old servers were wiped.
Former employees received severance agreements requiring silence.
A retired inspector named Martin Hale contacted Samuel before his files disappeared.
He admitted Vivian’s husband had instructed staff to replace Elena’s report.
Martin kept a printed copy because he feared someone would eventually be hurt.
He also possessed a voice memo recorded during the argument.
Vivian’s husband said:
Use the intern’s signature. If anyone asks, she approved it before leaving.
The memo implicated Hartwell.
It did not prove Vivian knew before the fire.
Martin believed she did.
He remembered Vivian entering the office while the report was changed.
But he could not hear what she said.
Daniel and Samuel continued gathering evidence.
Elena wanted criminal charges filed immediately.
Samuel advised patience.
The forged settlement loans created a separate financial case.
The fire case required proof connecting Vivian directly to the falsification.
Clara began working at a Cross Holdings subsidiary through a contractor acquisition.
She boasted that Daniel’s company needed her family’s connections.
She never realized Daniel had approved the acquisition partly to preserve Hartwell’s files under legal audit rights.
Vivian assumed Daniel was merely a wealthy heir with limited involvement in daily operations.
Most public photographs showed the corporation’s chief executive, not its private controlling owner.
Daniel allowed that assumption to remain.
Elena knew exactly who he was.
She also knew he refused to use the company as a weapon for personal revenge.
“I will not fire people because they dislike me,” she said.
“Neither will I.”
“But fraud is different.”
“Fraud is documented.”
They became engaged privately.
Elena invited Vivian and Clara because a part of her still wanted the family relationship she had imagined as a child.
Vivian interpreted the invitation as surrender.
