Chapter 10 - THE STORY WRITTEN BEFORE ELENA WOKE
While Elena remained unconscious, Vivian drafted a statement for the press.
It described a tragic lapse by a junior inspector.
It praised Hartwell for cooperating.
It claimed Elena had recognized her error and heroically returned to help victims.
Vivian intended to make Elena both culprit and symbol.
Guilty enough to protect the company.
Brave enough to generate sympathy.
The statement was never released because Cross Holdings refused to approve it.
But Vivian used the same narrative privately.
She gave it to insurers.
Settlement lawyers.
Relatives.
Even Elena’s rehabilitation doctors.
One therapist’s notes contained a sentence copied directly from Vivian:
Patient exhibits guilt associated with professional negligence.
Elena had spent years receiving treatment built around guilt for something she did not do.
Her nightmares were interpreted as remorse.
Her refusal to discuss the inspection became avoidance.
Her anger toward Vivian became trauma-related hostility.
Every reaction to manipulation was used as proof that Vivian’s version was correct.
Daniel sat beside Elena while she reviewed the records.
“I should have pushed harder to meet you after the fire,” he said.
“You were injured too.”
“I had money and lawyers.”
“You also had people telling you I wanted no contact.”
He looked toward the scar crossing her temple.
“They used my respect for your privacy against both of us.”
Elena understood.
Daniel had made mistakes.
He had believed legal representatives who claimed to speak for her.
But he had not stopped investigating.
Vivian had spent years insisting only Elena’s silence kept Daniel from suing.
The truth was the opposite.
Daniel’s refusal to accept the false story had preserved the evidence that cleared her.
Samuel filed motions to reopen the civil settlement and refer the fire case for criminal prosecution.
The families of other victims were notified.
Some reacted with relief.
Others with fury.
One mother asked Elena why she had waited so long.
Elena did not defend herself.
Then Daniel intervened.
“She was injured, isolated and represented by the people responsible.”
The mother began crying.
“So was my son.”
Elena took her hand.
“I know.”
Justice would not erase anyone’s loss.
