Chapter 16 - THE MARRIAGE AFTER THE REVEAL
Daniel and Elena’s wedding night did not happen as planned.
They spent it giving statements to investigators and checking on frightened relatives who had witnessed the confrontation.
At three in the morning, they sat on the hotel-room floor eating untouched wedding cake from paper plates.
“I ruined your reception,” Daniel said.
Elena looked at him.
“Vivian brought fraudulent documents.”
“I still took the microphone.”
“You defended me.”
“I also exposed part of your history without asking at that exact moment.”
Elena considered the distinction.
Daniel had shown her the planned presentation before the wedding.
She had approved its use if Vivian attempted coercion.
But neither expected the public mockery.
“I’m glad you spoke,” she said. “I’m also glad you’re asking whether it was yours to reveal.”
That became the pattern of their marriage.

When camera flashes overwhelmed Daniel, Elena guided him toward quieter spaces.
When crowded rooms made Elena feel watched, Daniel asked whether she wanted to leave instead of deciding for her.

Employees involved in Vivian’s fraud faced investigation through documented procedures.
Several were cleared.
Others were terminated or charged.
The guests who merely laughed received no corporate punishment.
Some apologized.
Elena accepted a few apologies.
She ignored others.
Being harmed did not make her responsible for improving everyone who witnessed it.
On their first anniversary, Daniel reserved no ballroom.
They ate dinner at home.
The cake leaned slightly because he baked it himself.
Elena laughed until her scars tightened.
