Chapter 5 - THE FIRST DOCUMENT HE GAVE HER
Daniel did not introduce himself as the owner of Cross Holdings.
Elena already knew his name.
What surprised her was his lack of anger.
He handed her a printed copy of an email recovered from the hotel’s server.
Elena’s original message was attached.
Three floors failed sprinkler-pressure testing. East exits cannot legally remain open to guests until corrected.
The final Hartwell report removed every warning.
“Did you write this?” Daniel asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you approve the final report?”
“No.”
“Then why did your attorney say you accepted responsibility?”
“I don’t have an attorney.”
Daniel became still.
Elena explained that Vivian handled the settlement because the family company was implicated.
He asked whether she knew how much Cross Holdings had paid.
Vivian told Elena the company had covered only medical treatment.
The actual settlement exceeded four million dollars.
Elena had received less than sixty thousand for living expenses.
The rest disappeared into the Hart Family Recovery Trust.
Daniel immediately offered legal assistance.
Elena refused.
“I will not become another project you control.”
He respected the answer.
Instead, he gave her Samuel Pierce’s card and said she could call without involving him.
Elena waited three weeks.
Then a rehabilitation clinic demanded payment for a procedure Vivian claimed the settlement covered.
Elena contacted Samuel.
He discovered loans taken against the trust.
One financed Clara’s apartment.
Another rescued Hartwell Safety Consulting after the fire.
A third paid Vivian’s mortgage.
Elena’s signature appeared on each application.
Every one was forged.
Samuel warned that exposing the fraud would reopen the fire investigation.
Elena nearly withdrew.
“If the report has my name, I could still lose everything.”
“You already lost years because they convinced you silence was protection,” he said.
Daniel did not pressure her.
He attended physical-therapy fundraisers where Elena volunteered.
They spoke about ordinary things.
Books.
Architecture.
Why expensive restaurants always served tiny desserts.
Months passed before he asked her to dinner.
Elena told him she did not want gratitude mistaken for love.
Daniel answered:
“You saved my life once. You do not owe me the rest of yours.”
