Chapter 4 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DARK GLASSES
Daniel spent eleven days in the hospital.
Smoke inhalation damaged his lungs.
A head injury caused temporary vision problems and long-term sensitivity to bright light.
That was why he sometimes wore dark glasses.
Not blindness.
Not weakness.
A reminder that he survived.
Cross Holdings’ attorneys immediately began investigating the fire.
Hartwell Safety Consulting provided the approved inspection bearing Elena’s signature.
Vivian described Elena as an inexperienced intern who had become emotionally unstable after making serious mistakes.
The company claimed Elena entered the building out of guilt.
Daniel did not believe it.
Before losing consciousness, he had heard Elena shouting that the sprinklers had never been repaired.
She knew the hazards before the fire began.
Someone who had falsely approved the building would not have sounded surprised that the same defects remained.
Daniel asked to meet her.
Vivian refused.
“Elena is ashamed and recovering privately.”
Daniel sent letters.
Vivian returned them unopened.
He sent flowers.
Clara posted photographs online mocking the arrangement.
“Apparently billionaires send roses when they want a witness to stay friendly,” she wrote.
Elena never saw the messages.
Vivian moved her into a rehabilitation apartment controlled by the family company.
Her mail was screened.
Her phone service was placed under Vivian’s account.
The settlement negotiations occurred without independent counsel.
Vivian told Elena that Cross Holdings planned to sue her personally.
“If you sign a confidentiality agreement, we can stop them.”
The agreement Elena signed did far more.
It assigned Vivian authority to manage all claims arising from the fire.
It allowed settlement money to enter a family-controlled trust.
It gave Hartwell’s attorney access to Elena’s medical records and digital signature.
Elena believed she was protecting herself.
Instead, she gave Vivian the tools to profit from her injuries.
Daniel’s legal team later received notice that Elena had accepted responsibility and refused contact.
He remained suspicious.
But the investigation stalled when Hartwell produced altered emails showing Elena had approved the safety report.
For two years, Daniel searched quietly.
Then he saw Elena across a crowded rehabilitation fundraiser.
She was standing alone near an exit, turning her scarred cheek away from the cameras.
Daniel recognized her voice before he recognized her face.
“You told me not to close my eyes,” he said.
