Chapter 8 - THE MANSION BECAME A CRIME SCENE
Michael ran toward the security panel inside the foyer.
He entered the password and deleted the local recording.
Then he ripped the doorbell unit from the wall.
By the time police vehicles entered the driveway, he was holding the broken camera in his hand.
Officer Ruiz saw it immediately.
“Put that down.”
Michael dropped the device.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
Donna was still leaning against Penelope.
The red mark around her neck had begun to darken.
Her wrists were bruised.
The chain lay on the stone beside the broken eggs.
Ruiz separated everyone.
Hattie claimed Donna had attacked her with the basket.
Michael said Penelope had staged the scene because she wanted money.
Penelope said nothing until Grace arrived.
The attorney stepped from her car holding a tablet.
“I have the complete recording.”
Michael’s face tightened.
“That footage was stolen.”
“It was shared by an authorized account holder.”
Grace played the video for Ruiz.
The officer watched Hattie wrap the chain around Donna.
He watched Michael grab Penelope.
He heard the demand for Samuel’s agreement.
When the clip ended, Ruiz looked toward Hattie.
“You are being detained.”
Hattie raised her chin.
“Do you know who I am?”
“Yes. You are the woman visible on this recording.”
Michael stepped forward.
“My mother was defending herself.”
Ruiz ordered him to stay back.
When Michael refused, two officers restrained him.
Penelope watched her husband being handcuffed.
She felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Paramedics placed Donna on a stretcher.
Penelope climbed into the ambulance beside her.
As the doors closed, Michael shouted her name.
“Penelope! Tell them this was a misunderstanding!”
She looked at him through the window.
“You told me to kneel beside my chained mother.”
The ambulance pulled away.
At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Donna had suffered bruising, dehydration, and a mild concussion from striking the stone.
The chain had not crushed her airway, but it had caused swelling around her neck.
Penelope sat beside the bed.
“I should have defended you sooner.”
Donna reached for her hand.
“You survived until you could leave. Do not confuse survival with betrayal.”
Grace arrived with emergency protective-order paperwork.
She explained that Michael and Hattie were being questioned.
The video supported allegations of assault, unlawful restraint, elder abuse, coercion, and destruction of evidence.
There was something else.
Grace had enhanced the audio from the minutes before the attack.
Hattie had mentioned a notary.
She had also claimed the farm would belong to Rosegate by sunset.
That meant the forged transaction was already moving through a bank or title company.
Grace began making calls.
At 4:17 p.m., she found the pending transfer.
The closing was scheduled for 5:00.
Someone had submitted documents claiming Donna had voluntarily sold her farm.
The sale price was less than one-quarter of its market value.
