Chapter 5 - THE CAMERA HATTIE FORGOT
Penelope photographed every page in the file.
She saved the images to a hidden cloud account.
Then she returned the papers exactly as she had found them.
Grace contacted her through a work email Michael did not know existed.
The attorney confirmed that the forged loan documents could support charges of fraud and identity theft.
But the original papers were still inside the mansion.
Grace needed time to obtain court protection before Penelope tried to leave.
“Evidence is important,” Grace wrote, “but your safety matters more.”
Penelope began building an emergency plan.
She hid cash inside an old makeup case.
She placed clothing and personal documents in a suitcase beneath the guest-room bed.
She memorized Grace’s number.
Then she remembered the mansion’s doorbell camera.
Michael had installed the smart security system shortly after moving in.
The family assumed only he and Hattie had administrative access.
But Penelope had helped connect the application to the household tablet during installation.
She still knew the recovery password.
Late one night, while Michael slept, Penelope created a separate account.
She connected the front entrance camera to cloud storage controlled by Grace.
She also programmed a button on her phone that would instantly send the previous ten minutes of footage.
The camera was positioned beneath the rose archway.
It captured the front steps, driveway, and most of the courtyard.
Penelope tested it by stepping outside and waving.
Seconds later, Grace confirmed she had received the clip.
For the first time in weeks, Penelope felt she had a witness.
Hattie believed expensive walls could hide anything that happened inside them.
She had forgotten the small red light beside her own front door.
Two days later, Michael announced that the bank had approved Rosegate’s loan.
Penelope knew that was impossible unless the forged collateral had been accepted.
“Hattie wants your mother to attend lunch on Friday,” he said.
“My mother will not sign anything.”
“She will when she understands the alternatives.”
“What alternatives?”
Michael adjusted his cuff links.
“Losing the farm through debt instead of selling it willingly.”
Donna did not owe Rosegate money.
But the forged loan made it appear that she had guaranteed the company’s debt.
If Rosegate defaulted, the lender could attempt to seize her land.
Penelope secretly called Donna from the housekeeper’s phone.
“Do not come here,” she whispered.
Donna’s answer was immediate.
“I’m coming to get you.”
“No, Mom. They want the documents.”
“What documents?”
“The original ownership and water-rights records. Hattie thinks you have them.”
Donna became silent.
“Mom?”
“There are papers your father left behind.”
“Where?”
“Not over the phone.”
Before Penelope could respond, footsteps approached.
She ended the call.
That evening, Michael searched her room.
He found the packed suitcase.
He carried it downstairs and placed it beside the front door.
Then he told Hattie.
Instead of becoming angry, Hattie smiled.
