Chapter 15 - MICHAEL FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH
Michael accepted the plea agreement.
His confession lasted nearly six hours.
He admitted Hattie had researched Penelope before arranging their first meeting.
He admitted he had married Penelope partly because Hattie believed marriage would provide access to the Hale trust.
He insisted that he later developed real feelings for her.
The prosecutor asked why those feelings had not stopped him from committing fraud.
Michael had no answer.
He admitted copying Penelope’s signature.
He admitted using her identity on the loan documents.
He admitted helping Hattie isolate her inside the mansion.
The plan had been to force Donna into selling the farm before Rosegate’s investors discovered the missing water rights.
If emotional pressure failed, Michael intended to use the fraudulent debt guarantee to threaten foreclosure.
Hattie arranged the final confrontation.
She instructed Michael to ensure Penelope remained inside.
She ordered the staff away.
She prepared the dog chain because she believed humiliation would break Donna faster than threats.
Michael claimed he had not known Hattie would place it around Donna’s neck.
But he admitted that when he arrived and saw the chain, he chose to stop Penelope instead of helping Donna.
The prosecutor asked why.
Michael stared at the table.
“Because I thought if Penelope reached her mother, we would lose everything.”
That sentence became the center of the case.
Not love.
Not panic.
Everything.
The company.
The mansion.
The project.
Michael had considered those things more valuable than two women’s safety.
Penelope read the transcript alone.
She did not cry until she reached the final page.
Michael had been asked whether Penelope ever willingly agreed to transfer Donna’s property.
He answered no.
Whether she authorized the loan.
No.
Whether Donna attacked Hattie.
No.
Whether the chain was necessary for anyone’s safety.
No.
His confession cleared Penelope and Donna completely.
It also destroyed Hattie’s remaining defense.
Hattie called Michael a liar trying to save himself.
She fired her legal team and hired new attorneys.
She rejected every plea offer.
She demanded a trial.
“I will never admit that those women defeated me,” she told one of her attorneys in a recorded jail call.
The prosecutor later played that sentence for the jury.
Penelope spent the weeks before trial rebuilding her life.
She rented a small apartment near Donna’s farm.
She began therapy.
She learned to sleep without listening for Michael’s footsteps.
Donna healed more slowly.
The bruises faded, but she still froze when she heard a chain rattle against a fence.
Mother and daughter attended counseling together.
They did not pretend healing was quick.
But each morning, they woke in a place where no one controlled the locks.
Then the trial began.
On the first day, prosecutors carried the dog chain into the courtroom inside a clear evidence bag.
