Chapter 13 - DONNA ENTERED THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR
Hattie arrived at Rosegate headquarters through the private executive entrance.
Donna walked through the front lobby.
She wore a simple blue dress.
The bruises around her neck were still visible.
Penelope walked beside her.
Employees stopped speaking as they passed.
Many had seen Hattie’s television interview.
She had called Donna a trespasser and Penelope an ungrateful daughter-in-law.
Now the two women were entering the emergency board meeting with Grace and a team of forensic accountants.
Hattie sat at the head of the table.
Michael appeared by video from his attorney’s office.
Because of the protective order, he could not attend in person while Penelope was present.
Hattie gave Donna a cold smile.
“This meeting is for shareholders.”
Grace placed the original certificates on the table.
“That is why Mrs. Hale is here.”
The company’s outside counsel reviewed Samuel’s agreements.
The room remained silent.
Rosegate had failed to pay the Hale trust for decades.
The trust’s voting rights had expanded each time the company issued new shares without settling the debt.
Donna and Penelope jointly controlled forty-eight percent.
Several independent directors controlled another eighteen percent.
Hattie no longer had a majority.
She stood.
“These documents are ancient.”
“They are enforceable,” the outside counsel said.
“They were obtained through extortion.”
“They were obtained from a bank box created by your late husband.”
Hattie turned toward Michael’s screen.
“Say something.”
Michael looked down.
Donna called for a vote removing Hattie as chief executive while the investigations continued.
The independent directors voted with her.
Hattie was removed.
She remained standing as a security officer approached.
“You cannot remove me from the company I built.”
Donna finally spoke.
“My husband helped build it. You erased his name, stole his profits, and then chained me because you were afraid his papers still existed.”
Hattie pointed toward Penelope.
“She manipulated my son.”
Penelope’s voice remained calm.
“Your email told him to marry me.”
The board members turned toward Michael’s screen.
He disconnected from the meeting.
Hattie lost her executive access.
Her corporate credit cards were canceled.
The board froze the accounts connected to the shell companies she controlled.
An independent receiver took possession of Rosegate’s records.
The company might survive, but only through a complete restructuring.
After the meeting, employees gathered in the lobby.
Donna expected anger.
Instead, an older construction supervisor approached her.
“Hattie emptied our retirement fund last year,” he said. “Can you find it?”
Donna promised that every missing dollar would be investigated.
The forensic team eventually traced millions into accounts connected to Hattie’s mansion, jewelry, and private expenses.
The house was no longer merely collateral for Samuel’s debt.
It was also property purchased and maintained with stolen company funds.
A court placed a lien on the estate.
Hattie was permitted to remain there temporarily.
But she no longer controlled the gates.
As Donna left the building, reporters called her name.
She stopped only once.
