Chapter 14 - THE STORY HATTIE COULD NOT CONTROL
Hattie hired a public-relations firm.
She appeared on television wearing pale colors and a delicate cross around her neck.
She claimed the chain had been part of a misunderstanding involving the family dog.
She said Donna had fallen.
She accused Penelope of editing the recording.
The public-relations firm described Penelope as a troubled young woman manipulated by an ambitious attorney.
For two days, some people believed her.
Then the doorbell company certified the footage.
The recording had not been altered.
Its timestamp matched the emergency call, police arrival, and local network logs.
A neighboring delivery driver’s dashboard camera also showed Donna entering the property safely and later being taken away in an ambulance.
Clara agreed to testify publicly.
The groundskeeper came forward after Hattie threatened to blame him.
He admitted Hattie had ordered him to prepare the chain two days before the attack.
The family driver revealed that Michael had instructed him to block Penelope’s car from leaving the garage.
Piece by piece, Hattie’s version collapsed.
Then Grace released no footage and no private medical records.
Instead, she issued one brief statement:
The evidence will be presented in court, where lying has consequences.
Hattie’s public attacks stopped.
Behind closed doors, her attorneys began negotiating.
They offered Donna the mansion.
She refused.
They offered Penelope a multimillion-dollar divorce settlement.
She refused.
They offered to repay the Hale trust if Donna asked prosecutors to reduce the charges.
Donna looked across the conference table.
“Hattie put a chain around my neck.”
The attorney lowered his voice.
“Mrs. Bellamy is an elderly woman facing prison.”
“So was I when she dragged me across the stone.”
The negotiations ended.
Michael requested a private meeting with Penelope.
Grace refused.
He sent a recorded statement through his attorney.
“I loved you,” he said. “My mother introduced us because of the farm, but what happened afterward was real.”
Penelope watched without expression.
Michael continued.
“I tried to delay the plan. I thought I could protect you and still keep my family together.”
Then he said the sentence that destroyed his defense.
“I only grabbed you that morning because you were making everything worse.”
He still believed Penelope’s resistance had caused the violence.
He still saw himself as the man forced to control her.
Penelope authorized Grace to answer.
There would be no private meeting.
There would be no reconciliation.
She would testify.
Michael’s attorney soon approached prosecutors about a plea agreement.
To receive a reduced sentence, Michael would have to admit the conspiracy and testify against Hattie.
