Chapter 1 - THE CHAIN BENEATH THE ROSES

Donna Hale was on her knees beneath the rose-covered archway, a dog chain locked around her neck.

Her dress was torn at one shoulder.

Dirt covered her knees.

The basket she had carried to the Bellamy mansion lay overturned on the white stone courtyard. Eggs were shattered beside crushed tomatoes, bread, and vegetables from her farm.

Hattie Bellamy stood above her in a white designer suit, gripping the chain with one gloved hand.

“Bark,” Hattie said coldly, “and I’ll throw you a bone.”

The front door flew open.

Penelope froze on the steps.

For one terrible second, she could not understand what she was seeing.

Then Donna tried to speak.

“Penny… don’t—”

Penelope ran.

She dropped beside her mother and pulled at the metal clasp around Donna’s neck.

“What did you do to her?”

Hattie gave the chain another tug.

“Your mother came onto my property and refused to behave.”

“This is assault!”

“This is discipline.”

Penelope reached for the clasp again.

Before she could open it, Michael charged across the courtyard and yanked her upright by the arm.

His face was red with fury.

“Get on your knees and apologize to my mother.”

Penelope cried out as his fingers tightened.

Donna struggled toward them, but the chain pulled against her throat.

“Leave my daughter alone!”

Michael shoved Penelope toward the stone path.

For years, she had lowered her voice whenever he raised his.

She had apologized to keep the peace.

She had allowed Hattie to humiliate Donna because Michael always promised things would become worse if she resisted.

But as Penelope looked at the chain around her mother’s neck, something inside her finally broke free.

She lifted her eyes to Michael.

“No.”

Michael stared at her.

“What did you say?”

Penelope’s phone had slipped halfway from her coat pocket.

The screen was still glowing.

On it was the Bellamy mansion’s doorbell application.

A tiny red symbol showed that the camera beside the entrance was recording.

Penelope wrapped her fingers around the phone and pressed the emergency-sharing button she had created weeks earlier.

Hattie followed her gaze toward the camera.

For the first time, her confidence faltered.

“Michael,” she whispered.

Penelope returned to Donna and released the chain.

“Mom, not for them,” she said. “You will never kneel for them again.”

Across town, attorney Grace Monroe received a video file marked urgent.

She opened it.

Her face changed when she saw Donna on the ground.

Then she heard Hattie’s voice in the minutes recorded before Penelope had stepped outside.

Grace stood so quickly that her chair rolled backward.

She grabbed her keys, called 911, and reached for the legal file bearing the Bellamy family name.

Back in the courtyard, Penelope helped Donna stand.

A suitcase waited just inside the doorway.

Penelope pulled it outside and faced her husband.

“Check the doorbell.”

Michael slowly turned toward the blinking red light.

The color drained from his face.

Because the camera had not only recorded the chain.

May you like

It had recorded Hattie explaining exactly why Donna had been brought to the mansion.

👉 What Hattie said before Penelope opened the door would turn a brutal family humiliation into evidence of a much larger crime.
