Chapter 7 - “GET ON YOUR KNEES”

Penelope raced across the courtyard.
Donna’s face was pale.
The chain had left a deep red mark around her neck.
Hattie stood above her as if the scene were perfectly reasonable.
“Bark,” she said, “and I’ll throw you a bone.”
Penelope dropped beside Donna.
“What did you do?”
“She arrived screaming and attacked me,” Hattie replied.
“You chained an elderly woman!”
“She needed to be controlled.”
Penelope tried to release the clasp.
Michael grabbed her from behind and pulled her upright.
“Stop embarrassing my mother.”
“Look at what she did!”
“I see a trespasser who assaulted her.”
“That is my mother!”
Michael tightened his grip.
“Get on your knees and apologize.”
Donna reached toward her daughter.
“Penny, leave.”
Michael shoved Penelope forward.
Her knee struck the stone, but she caught herself before falling completely.
He had expected her to cry.
He expected her to beg.
Instead, Penelope looked toward the small red light beside the front door.
Still recording.
She slipped one hand into her coat pocket.
Her fingers closed around the phone.
Hattie noticed.
“Take that from her.”
Michael reached for the device.
Penelope pressed the emergency-sharing button before he could grab it.
The previous ten minutes of footage uploaded to Grace.
Penelope pulled away and rushed back to Donna.
She opened the clasp around her neck.
The chain struck the ground with a metallic crack.
“Mom, not for them.”
Donna leaned against her daughter.
Hattie’s confidence began to collapse.
She looked toward the doorbell.
“How long has that camera been active?”
Penelope did not answer.
Michael turned toward it.
“You changed the settings?”
“You should check the recording.”
Across town, Grace opened the video.
She watched Hattie restrain Donna.
She heard Michael order Penelope to kneel.
Then she rewound to the moment before Penelope had opened the door.
Hattie’s voice was perfectly clear.
“Your husband’s agreement controls the water rights. Tell me where it is, and I may let your daughter leave this house without losing everything.”
Donna answered, “You forged her name because Samuel’s trust cannot be transferred without Penelope’s consent.”
Hattie laughed.
“The notary has already stamped the deed. By sunset, your farm will belong to Rosegate.”
Grace called 911.
She also contacted Detective Luis Ruiz, an investigator she knew from a previous elder-abuse case.
At the mansion, Penelope dragged her suitcase through the front door.
Michael blocked the driveway.
“You are not leaving.”
“I already left this marriage.”
“You have no money. No car. No place to go.”
“I have my mother.”
Michael grabbed the suitcase.
Penelope refused to release it.
Donna stepped between them despite the pain in her neck.
“Touch her again, and you will have to do it in front of me.”
Michael laughed.
“What are you going to do?”
A siren sounded beyond the gates.
Then another.
Hattie stared at Penelope.
“You called the police?”
May you like
“No,” Penelope said. “Your camera did.”
👉 When the officers arrived, Michael tried to erase the footage—but the video had already reached more than one secure location.
