Chapter 8 - The Signature From Santorini
The document was dated three days after the wedding.
Ava remembered that day clearly.
She and Ethan had eaten breakfast on a terrace overlooking the sea.
He had asked her to sign a hotel excursion waiver on his tablet.
She barely read it.
She trusted him.
The digital certificate now showed her signature on a marital business agreement.
According to the document, Ethan owned fifty percent of Ava’s company upon marriage.
It also gave him authority to replace her as chief executive if her conduct damaged the brand.
“He switched the file after I signed,” Ava said.
Her attorney examined the metadata.
“The document may have been altered, but proving it will take time.”
Ethan’s representatives requested an emergency board meeting.
Ava’s business had five directors.
Two were investors introduced by Victoria.
They voted to suspend Ava pending investigation.
Ava sat outside the conference room while executives discussed the company she had built.
Patients recognized her from the edited video.
Some avoided her.
Others quietly squeezed her hand.
One woman recovering from a shoulder injury approached.
“You taught me that defending myself did not make me violent.”
Ava swallowed hard.
“That is still true.”
“Then do not let them use your defense against you.”
Inside the boardroom, the vote ended.
Ava was temporarily removed.
Ethan, still facing criminal charges, nominated a replacement executive through his alleged ownership rights.
The replacement was his cousin.
Victoria’s plan was clear.
If Ava surrendered, the Cole family would absorb her company.
If she fought, they would portray her as unstable.
Lena searched the honeymoon photographs.
“Did Ethan ever leave the tablet unattended after you signed?”
Ava remembered a hotel employee collecting breakfast dishes.
A young man had accidentally spilled coffee near the tablet.
Ethan shouted at him and demanded his name.
The hotel manager later apologized.
Ava checked her phone.
She still had a photograph of the terrace taken moments after signing.
The tablet screen was visible in the reflection of a silver coffee pot.
The displayed document title was not the business agreement.
It read:
AEGEAN BOAT EXCURSION LIABILITY WAIVER
Her attorney enlarged the image.
“This proves the file on screen was different.”
“But not that he changed it later.”
The hotel server might remember.
Ava called the resort.
The manager’s voice became cautious when she mentioned Ethan.
“The employee who served you no longer works here.”
“Why?”
“He was dismissed after Mr. Cole accused him of stealing from your room.”
Ava had never heard about any theft.
“Where is he now?”
The manager hesitated.
