Chapter 12 - The Death on the Lake
Ethan was twenty-one when his father, Richard Cole, died.
The official report said Richard fell from the family boat after drinking.
His body was found two days later.
Victoria inherited control of Cole Urban Development.
The encrypted folder contained emails between Victoria and the boat mechanic.
One message ordered him to disable the emergency radio before the trip.
Another transferred fifty thousand dollars after Richard’s death.
There was also a statement written by a marina employee.
He saw Richard and Ethan arguing on the dock.
Richard had discovered Victoria’s bribery accounts.
He planned to remove her from the company and report the payments.
Ethan begged his father not to destroy the family.
The marina employee later saw Ethan and Victoria return without Richard.
He reported his concerns.
A police supervisor closed the case.
The same supervisor appeared in Victoria’s payment records.
Federal investigators reopened the death inquiry.
Ethan learned about the flash drive while still in custody.
His attorney immediately requested a private meeting with Victoria.
Police obtained permission to monitor the conversation because both were under investigation.
Ethan’s voice sounded frightened.
“You said the lake was handled.”
Victoria answered:
“It was, until Lena started stealing files.”
“You told me she deleted them.”
“I told you what you needed to hear.”
“What if they find out I was there?”
A long silence.
Then Victoria said:
“You did not push him.”
Ethan whispered:
“I stopped him from climbing back into the boat.”
Ava heard the recording in Detective Warren’s office.
Her stomach turned.
Richard had fallen during the argument.
He had reached for the boat ladder.
Ethan watched him struggle and did nothing.
Victoria then disabled the radio and waited before calling for help.
Ethan had been twenty-one.
Old enough to understand.
Young enough for Victoria to convince him that protecting the company mattered more than saving his father.
That was the origin of his rules.
Obedience.
Silence.
Family reputation above human life.
But understanding did not excuse what he had done to Lena, Marisol, Ava, and the others.
Ethan had spent years choosing to continue the pattern.
Warren closed the audio file.
“He may cooperate against Victoria.”
Ava shook her head.
“He will only cooperate if it protects him.”
That afternoon, Ethan offered prosecutors a deal.
He would testify about the construction bribery and his father’s death.
In exchange, he wanted the assault charge reduced and the evidence from his former partners sealed.
Lena stood beside Ava when they heard.
“He wants to erase us again.”
